Budget fruit fly cure

You'll need:
1 plastic bottle (ex: 20 oz water bottle, 2 L soda bottle...whatever size you have around)
cider vinegar
duct tape
scissors
dish soap

Remove label. Cut top of bottle off...just above where the label used to be. Pour about 1 cup of vinegar in the bottom of the bottle. Squit a drop of dish soap into the vinegar. Turn the top upside down and insert in the bottom like a funnel. Tape edges together. Sit out where fruit flies are a problem. Flies go down funnel and can't get out. Dish soap makes it hard to fly.

Ours sat out 24 hours b/4 i caught anything, but in the last day I've caught 6flies. DH is impressed. FYI the gestation of a fruit fly is 10 days...so if the adult flies laid eggs, they will hatch in 10 days. You may need to retreat.

Or wash the fruit when you get home from the grocery store and store in the refrigerator!

Our budget fruit fly solution is to have carnivorous plants, we have about 5 different types in our kitchen, they are amazing!!!! We haven't had fruit flies since we got the first one, which prompted us to get more. That and DBF has a co-worker and they are his hobby, he is forever bringing new plants to him, just gives them to us. And if we seem to have issues keeping them alive we take them back to him and he "cures" them.

APs expired 1-3-2010, the girls are still good until 2-6-2010 but we have no plans for a visit before they expire. No plans for our next visit, it will be 2011 or 2012 before we head back. We've had fun DLR/DCA, we will miss you while we are gone. We took 14 trips from July 07-July 08 and around 16 from Jan 09-Jan 10.

I know!!! I know!!!! Although they look like fruit flies, they are called drain flies. They live in the "gunk" buildup in your drains! To confirm this, cover the sink tightly with plastic wrap at night, and the next morning all the flies will be caught under the plastic wrap.

To get rid of them, simply use a good drain cleaner and follow the directions. Depending upon how clean (or dirty) your pipes are, you may have to do this more than once.

We had them last week..YUCK! I think they came in on a cantelope. Anyway...the jar thing is great, but use a banana. I did 2 jars...one with cidar vinegar & one with a banana. I got lots more of them caught in the banana jar!
