Kona Kone and Hot Dogs!
We're in countdown mode for our Sept. 6th arrival at WDW!
Just a couple of questions if you please.. Kona Kone - what is it?? I see it on the menu and heard some things about it, but am not sure what's special about it. We have an ADR at Kona and the menu looks great - just curious as to what's in a Kona Kone. Hot Dogs.. right now DS has one food group - hot dogs. He doesn't even eat chicken tenders any more. He'll almost be 3 when we go. We're on DXDP - plenty of food to share. We're doing character meals, buffets and family style meals. Most of the buffets list some sort of hot dog for the kiddie section. However, there are some restaurants I know we will have to get DS a kids meal -don't mind the OP - as there's nothing on the adult menu he would share. Like Konas - I will be getting the hot dog kids meal. Here's my question - how big are the kids meals hot dogs? DS is purist - hot dog only - no bun no condiments and a few french fries - maybe. When we got out someplace like and Applebees we always order 2 kids hot dog meals as one hot dog is not enough for DS and he doesn't each much if any of the side dishes. So I was wondering if I will need to order an extrea hot dog at WDW. I know substitutions don't always happen and some CMS or restaurants can be more accomodating than others - ideally I would love to be able to order a kids meal hot dog with 2 hot dogs and no appetizer as DS will probably not eat the appetizer and why waste it. Heck, I'd even forego the dessert as well for 2 hots dogs and FFs. Between our snacks and desserts on DXDP there's plenty for DS and I would rather him have enough hot dogs then ice cream. If I have to I will buy 2 hot dog kid meals for DS or pay extra to get and extra hot dog..there will be about 3 meals I will have to do this for. When we go to Norway for dinner I will most likely get him a hot dog as a CS before we go to dinner - no offense, but $20 for a hot dog is a bit much and we're taking DS more for the character experience then the food - plus I ordered a birthday cupcake for him there. Anyway, sorry to ramble. Thanks for your input. |

The Kona Cone is sort of a make-your-own sundae in a cone: ice cream served in an oversized wafflecone served surrounded by toppings...cottoncandy, sprinkles, hotfudge, m&ms, gummybears, and the like.(Don't quote me on the toppings.) It's quite a hit with the little ones!
As for hotdogs...I only know for sure that Casey's on Main street always has them. I would call DISNEY DINING forbetter information on that....Can youpass off vienna sausage as hot dogs in a pinch? ![]() Have a great trip!

Here is a pic of the Kona Kone we got last year. We loved it!
![]() I though we had a pic of the hot dog, but for the life of me I can't find it. I don't remember much about the hot dog. Sorry.

Keep in mind that the Kona Kone is an adult desert option, so if you're on the dining plan, an adult would have to order it. The child's desert option is generally a build your own sundae. Once upon a time, a long time ago, the Kona Kone (then the Kidde Kone) was a child's desert option.

I'm not cncerned about orderin dessert for my son as we're on DXDP and have plenty of desserts and with 3 adults there's more then enough to order on for my son and 2 others to share. I was just curious what was in a Kona Kone - chances are my son will prefer the make your own sundae.
What I'm MOST CONCERNED about is the size of the hot dogs for a kids meal. One of the kids meals choices on Kona is hot dog with appetizer (soup or salas) and fries and dessert. DS won't eat the soup or salad and maybe eat some for the fries. He likes hot dogs and we usually order 2 when we take him out. I'm just wondering if I'll have to do the same a Disney if I order a kids meal for him. Does anyone know how big the hot dogs are for kids meals? I'm assuming (hoping) that if I need to order 2 hot dogs they will be able to do so with an extra chage - when we go to Applebees I have to order 2 full hot dog kids meal - they won't just give me the extra hot dog. It would be great if I could substitute the appetizer for an extra hot dog, but I doubt it... |

From the hot dogs that i've seen, they look like a normal average hot dog to me. Some places that have them as adult meals have the 1/4 lb size big ones.
If you don't see a hot dog on the menu, or want to make a substitute, ASK! If the server isn't accomodating, ask to talk to a manager and explain that you have a child who is going through a hot dog phase and can they help you out a lil bit? I imagine you will be pleasantly surprised most of the time (if a server doesn't help, it just means they don't know what they are doing yet. Don't accept a no from someone who isn't authorized to give you a yes). Although I don't see it on the menu, I have even seen trip reports with kids getting hot dogs at Cindy's Royal Table. So, they have them everywhere I'm sure. I am a big allears reader as well as the Disboards. Allears.net has VERY detailed menus that will show hotdogs listed, price, kids meal or adult options for parks and resorts. For example: AK flame tree has a hot dog kids meal 4.99 for full meal including drink (similar price everywhere) HS Fairfax fare has a chili dog (hold the chili) adult meal. 50's prime time has a kid hot dog meal. Epcot Liberty Inn Cafe in America has an adult hot dog meal. MK Casey's corner on main street has a hot dog meal. cosmic ray's has an adult hot dog meal. (1/4 lb size) toontown dogone good dogs has them. (check to see if it's a snack credit there) friar's nook in fantasyland has them. westward ho refreshments in frontierland has a corn dog for $3.69 (MIGHT be a snack credit) I think that the value resorts all have hot dog kids meals. You could always stock up there and keep them in the room frig. You can also buy packs of hot dogs in the coolers of many of the resort sundry shops, especially the Vacation Club resorts where they have kitchens. (They sell more food in the shops to make for yourself there). At the least i would ask if they would take an extra snack credit for an extra bunless hotdog everywhere. No harm in asking! I'm sure they will accomodate you better than you may think. I'm CERTAIN your son will not go hungry. Who knows, being in Disney and seeing mickey shaped food might make him WANT to try some different things. DISNEY MAGIC!

here is a trip report link that has a pic of the child's hot dog. It's from Cinderella's royal table (and a hot dog isn't even on the listed menu so they CAN get them if you ask).
Looks like a normal hot dog to me. http://www.disboards.com/showthread....2233986&page=4 here is a pic (bottom of page) of the hot dog at casey's corner in the MK from the same trip report. It looks pretty big to me and comes out of the bun. http://www.disboards.com/showthread....2233986&page=7 hope this helps! Don't worry!

Thanks JeanieBlue - your pics of CRT are great - looks like you had a wonderful time and good food.
Most of our ADRS are character and family-stye buffets. And I did check allears and they usually had some kind of hot dog listed for the kids selections. One of the reasons I picked Kona (not only because I wanted to try it) is that I noticed it had a hot dog listed as a kids meal. From your pictures it looks like we'll have to ask for 2 - don't see why they won't accomdate and I don't mind paying extra - kids meals a reasonably priced. The only meal I won't get a hot dog is Norway - $20 is a bit steep for a hot dog. Our ADRS are for 6:40 and I plan to get DS a hot dog or 2 at a CS in EPCOT before we go to Norway. He may eat some of the cold cuts and cheeses from the appetizer and I ordered a special birthday cupcake for him And I'm sure he'll enjoy one of the fancy kids drinks..plus the main appeal will be the characters. Thanks again for your input - your pictures were very helpful. Now I just have to wait 3 weeks and 3 days before we're on our way!! |

My daughter was in a hot dog phase not too long ago, and then someone referred me to this study:
http://www.preventcancer.com/patient...en/hotdogs.htm I am the farthest from a worry wart, & I just wanted to show you the link in case you were unaware! There are nitrite free hot dogs out there --- they don't taste too bad either. |
