Work - Vent

Had to attend a golf tournament today. Two local companies were putting on a golf tournament to benefit the non-profit I work for, so we had to be there to help out.

Last night they had the pairings party and we had to be there for that too. We were originally supposed to be there at 5:30pm so that the people working with the two local companies could let us know what we were supposed to be doing. At 3:30 my boss calls to let us know he wants us all there at 5:15pm. Okay 15 minutes earlier, no problem. Now this party is supposed to be from 6pm to 10pm. We find our that we are to be floaters, helping out or relieving people if they need it. At one point I go up to one of the tables and help out with the balloon prize pop. I really did not mind. But while I am doing that, the rest of our staff are all sitting at our table socializing.

Thankfully the party finished early so that was good.

Then today we are told that we are supposed to be at the golf course at 6am. The person that told us to be there at that time didn't even show until 6:20am and the people working for the two companies didn't get there until 6:30am. So the boss tells us we have a table at one of the tees. We will take turns being at the table. Myself and "T" head out to our table at 8am. At 9:30am we have yet to see any of the other staff. I head to the club house for a potty break and when I get back "S" is there with her hubby. Then the boss's wife shows up and then "T's" wife shows up. "R" shows up, & soon the boss is there too. So "T", his wife & I head out to see what is going on at some of the other tees. We get back after about 30 minutes (if that) and boss heads off with his wife, "S" & her hubby take off. "R" takes off. I run to the club house for another potty break. When I get there, Boss, his wife & "R" are there. When I come out of the bathroom, "S" and her hubby are there. I head back to the tee and "T", his wife & I give it another 30 minutes to see if any more golfers are coming through. When we don't see anyone else, we pack it up and head back. The rest are still in the clubhouse, sitting around talking.

"T" & I were really ticked that we were left to man the table and the rest are either riding around in the carts or sitting in the clubhouse. Most of the time, I am sure they were in the clubhouse. The first time I went up there, that's where the boss was. "T" told me while we were riding around that when "S" came up, he asked her is she was there to relieve us and she said no that she was just coming to see if anyone had to go to the bathroom.

I was going to work our kickoff on the 3rd of Sept, and then catch my flight to my niece's wedding. But now I am going to take the morning off and take my time getting ready for my flight. After everything that I did this weekend I really do not feel guilty about taking the time. Plus I have lots of leave time.

Thanks for letting me vent.

It's not a good feeling to be working while others are supposed to be working.

Oh, I hear you. I remember how ticked off I was once when the two guys at my place of employment decided to make a work day of doing a charity golf tournament (did I mention as a WORK DAY!??) and left us two girls to handle everything-short staffed. I was ticked off, still am, two years later. I need to learn to let go.

i honestly dont see the problem. you work for a nonprofit that is being supported by a golf outing and you had to sit around during the golf outing, and what, watch for a hole in one or something? doesnt sound too bad to me. guess i would be grateful and happy to do whatever was needed to make sure the outing was a success. and if that meant "working" harder than others so be it. i always wanted to be one of those that manned the hole always seemed kind of fun actually.

I had no problem "working" the table. My problem was with the others who were "supposedly" working. When I went on the second break to the clubhouse, "S" left 1 minute before I did and got to the clubhouse 2 minutes after I did. She was going to go around to see if anyone else needed a break. There is no way that she could have gotten around 1 course let alone 2 courses in that short of time.

There was no tent for shade at the table. We had to rely on the trees for shade. At noon, there was no shade over the table at all. Thankfully we had the golf carts to sit in.

Also at this point I don't know if we are being paid for today or last night. Also last night while I was at the balloon pop table, I could see the others sitting at our table socializing, enjoying the evening. Again, I didn't mind helping, but at the beginning of the evening, the boss said that we would ALL be helping out. Meaning all the staff would be helping the other volunteers.

When the boss called me at 3:30 yesterday, he made a point of asking me if my DH knew that I would be working last night. I told him yes, he knew. As it happened, my DH didn't go with me because he wasn't feeling good.

After talking with my DH today and going over everything that was said yesterday and today, even he isn't happy about what went on.

Well, if you saw it going on, it's a good chance the boss saw it too. He might not have said anything to the ones that should have been working, but bosses have a long memory. They may regret the fun and games they had. It's good that you did the right thing.

Problem is we are a small office - 5 staff total. The boss was part of the problem. I mean I like my boss, he is 100% better than my old boss. I have been in this office for 15 years. The next person has 2 years in the office. The boss has only been here 1 1/2 years. Sometimes I feel like being the oldtimer does not have its benefits. Part of this goes back to my old boss and that is another story - LONG- in itself. Sometimes I feel like I am being kept out of the loop on somethings.

If the boss hadn't been part of those that were not doing anything, I would say that yes it was noticed, but he was right there leading the pack.

We all got polo shirts for this event and I told them that I would need a Women's Large or a Men's Medium. "T" was there when I told "S" the sizes. When the shirts came in, I had a Men's Large. This thing is really big (actually two shirts). My boss turns and says "you can always sell it to "R".

I guess I am just really in the dumps right now. I almost feel like I am not going to have a job soon, but the boss doesn't want to tell me. I was supposed to have my review in May and he has yet to give it too me. This means that if I was getting a raise, I haven't gotten it yet. They will have to back date it to my anniversary date, but that is not the point.

I'm sorry, Mari.

I missed where the boss was part of it. I can see why you are down in the dumps. There are a lot of undercurrents. It sounds like you feel like you're in limbo in a lot of ways.

If it were me, I'd put some discreet feelers out for another job. I'd suggest having a frank talk with your boss, but you don't know where that might lead. Feeling the way you do, and knowing what you know, I'd have something on the back burner before I had a talk with him. Not getting your review might mean there isn't any money to give you a raise and he's putting it off? I thought legally he was bound to give you your review. And even if he was putting it off to avoid giving you a raise, I would think he'd have to give you the raise (and retroactively).

I don't know. It's a tough situation. You sound like a good, dependable worker. You shouldn't be treated the way you are now.

Thank you OceanAnnie. I really enjoy my job and as I said it is 100% better than before my new boss.

My old boss was a real piece of work, he literally made life at work so unbearable for one person, she retired. Then he started going after another person in the office. She is a Pooh sized person and really great to work with. He would constantly make comments about her weight, cussed at her over the intercom and actually made a comment during a meeting with outside people that "to help themselves to seconds on lunch because otherwise "this person" would finish it off".

She ended up with some serious health issues and decided to retire. I got her position. We ended up with 3 new people in our office, one of whom was a total "B". She eventually left after the old boss retired. My DH went to the board due to have them look at what the old boss was doing and in the end we figure he was given the option to retire or be fired.

Since I am the only one who has any type of time in the office, they all come to me with questions about things, but there are some things that the old boss did, that I have no idea why he did them or how he did them. I had only been in my present position 4 months when he left. So I ended up with a lot of learn as I go type training after he left.

I really don't care if I get a raise. I would just like to get my review and know where I stand.
