10 months .. a little young?
Hi all,
I am hoping for some help. My DH and I are hoping to book a disney cruise for the Christmas period, Our DD will be 10 months old. Do you think this is a little young to take her on a disney cruise? Would another cruise line be better or should we stick with a land vacation? My husband and I would both like to go on a disney cruise and will do it again when she is a bit older, I wondered however if anyone has done it with a baby before and how it worked out.. Thank you in advance! |

The main benefit for you will be access to Flounder's nursery. We cruised Disnay with our 3 yr old and 10 mos old- and were able to have actual adult only time! Previously, we'd cruised Celebrity when our eldest was 10 mos and they offer no child care service for that age (didn't explore in-room sittingn as we were with grandma/grandpa).
10 mos is a good age as, in our family, baby is starting to eat solids so can be more 'included' with meals but isn't walking yet (again, in our experience!) and so can be better contained than older toddlers. Our son LOVED Flounder's...we tried to schedule for nap times but he wouldn't sleep while there! As long as you're cruising because you want to... and not for your child- we think Disney is a great choice. And, you'll have the benefit of wonderful memories for yourself. |

We cruised Disney when our oldest was 1yr 5mo. Our cruise this year will be with the youngest right at 1yr. Some people thought we were crazy going on the last cruise, but we wanted to go on a Disney cruise and we had a great time. Flounders is wonderful. There are also plenty of kid-friendly things for the little ones to look at and be entertained by - no issues with having your little one get bored, which leads to cranky in our experience. We also have some wonderful video and pictures of our son on the beach and CC.
SIL and her family recently went on a cruise with a little one. They used the service where you could ship diapers and formula to the ship and loved it. You should go and have a blast - it sure beats driving!

Well, if you're going to cruise with a 10 month old, Disney is definitely the line to use...and 2009 is the year to do it. Currently you pay only the port charges and government fees for a child under 3, that is about to change.
Frankly, the cruise is easier than at home--your room steward will make up the pack and play crib, empty the diaper genie, etc. for you. It's much easier than a land vacation. The Flounder's Nursery is there when you want some babysitting so you can have adult time. So, the real question is whether you want to do any vacation with a child that age. If the answer is yes, a Disney cruise is an excellent choice. |

Our second cruise our kids were 4, 2 and 8 months. One of the best vacations we ever took! We did things at thier speed, the cruise was relaxing, the kids enjoyed everything, the 8 month old loved taking everything in. So many people came up to us and said "Wow your brave" Because we were out numbered by 3 very little ones. I was ready to get a shirt made that said "YES we are brave!!"!!! It was a great week and we felt very close with our kids and made some wonderful memories more for us then them. Childhood is so short and I feel so blessed that we are able to have such wonderful memories of great vacations! We even did a few excurions with them and again they were great! I think cruising is one of the best vacations you can take with small kids and infants. You can make the cruise what you want, relaxing or go go go!!!
Good Luck and make lots of memories! |

It really depends what you want out of your trip. It is such a personal decision. I would ask yourself what you want to do and look at all your options. Many think kids are too young to enjoy Disney World at such a young age but we took our kids (starting with my oldest at 9 months) every year and it has always been the best vacations ever. We changed to DCL when our 3rd was 2.5 so I can't comment on cruising with a baby, but as I said, it really depends on what you want to do on the cruise to see if it fits what you want out of your vacation.

One of the reasons we looked at disney was because of Flounders actually. We obviously want to spend time with DD and introduce her to so many new things but it would be so amazing to have a couple of hours to ourselves.
We have been on Carnival before and I think I would prefer the more family orientated aspect of Disney.... it just seems so fun! For us as well as the little one. Does anybody know when they start charging for Infants? Maybe we should get on this and book right now! Thanks! |

That's really up to you. Your money, your patience, your kid.
Both my kids has frequent flyer cards by age 2, but those trips were all to Grandma and Grandpa (1700 miles each way) and Great-Grandma and Great-Granpa's (1800 miles each way) house, so other than a plane trip, almost like being at home We did the parks at age 4 for both, WAY WAY WAY too young, they really didn't start to appreciate those trips until about age 8. My first trip was at age 8 and I really don't remember it. DW was at 11. First cruise for our kids was age 11 and 15. For us, 11 years is about as young as we would want to take one of our kids. Just toooooooooo much money form them not to get full enjoyment, and tooooooo much money for me to put up with naps, tantrums etc.

They are charging for infants on the 2010 cruises. For 2009 there is no cruise fare, just the port taxes.

Last year, my wife and I booked a June 2010 Baltic cruise. It was pricey, but we felt that it was worth it. A few months later, we became pregnant. A quick conversation with our travel agent later and the trip was booked for the seven month(ish) old baby. It cost us $1000 to add her.
I think that it's important to remember that vacations for very young children are not for the children. They are for the parents. Our baby will not remember any of that trip, but that shouldn't stop us from taking occasional vacations. We need them. |

I would go
We took our first cruise when our only daughter was 5. We planned our second cruise for 2 years later. We were not planning on more children. When I became pregnant, I asked my parents to baby-sit while we cruised. The day he was born, I knew he was going with us. I probably knew before he was born.
Our first cruise was so relaxing. I had low expectations for our second. Our son was still nursing and not sleeping all night at 9 months when we cruised. We booked Flounders for all of our meals. He did great. The in-laws went with us. We split up for the shows. I took our son to the kids club during lunch times so he could play there. It really was a great experience for us. He still didn't sleep through the night, but that would have been the case at home as well. He loved the sights and sounds. I got lots of exercise walking him on the track on deck 5. We are going again in January. He will not quite be three. I am just hoping he will be potty trained...

People are correct in saying that your baby will not remember the cruise. However, the baby will enjoy the experience while there. You will take so much pleasure from their joy. You will have lots of pictures to share.
