Garden gone crazy, lots of onions, storing ??

My onions took off like gang busters. I've got large white and yellow onions I need to pull. How do you store them so they last into the winter months ??

I've already chopped 55 cups of onions and have them frozen for my canning. Thank goodness for the food processor ! I've got another row to dig yet....HELP.... Lisa

I see you are in Ohio so do you have a basement?

My grandparents would take pantyhose (clean ), and place an onion in the foot and tie a knot. Then place another onion and tie another knot. You get the picture. Then hang the pantyhose in the basement. Their onions never molded and kept through the months .

Sorry I do not have an answer for you, but I do have a question. What did you plant (seeds, etc) and when did you plant it?

This works very well. You will be surprised just how far a pair of pantyhose will stretch!! Looks comical, but does the trick.

My mom would knock off the dirt but not wash with water for them to keep for a long time. She would put them in a cool spot.

I do have a basement. And I'm going to dig out the old pantyhose tonight. Thank you so much for the tip.

Tink.... I bought the onion sets from Menard's this spring. They come in the mesh bags. It was a pretty warm spring, we are north of Columbus. I had them in the ground on May 6th. I really think the secret is.... mound the dirt. Plant the onion, once the green starts to come through the dirt, I mounded the dirt over the sprout about 5-6 inches high. I just take my hoe and go right down the row, pulling dirt onto the onion. Do the same on the other side of the row. You'll end up with a nice mound of soil over the entire row. My DH has wanted me to do this for years. Honestly, I never bothered. Until this year. It made a world of difference. I have onions galore. And they are all nice in size. Best crop I have ever had.
