Wow.... rumor basic writing on ears is no longer free :(

Wonder if anyone here can confirm this? I was reading on another board not from a Disney site; that DL now charges 3$ to add your name to the ear hats.
Small charges here and there, wonder what else will be "nickle and dimed" if this is true a glass of water ? I need to stop reading all these boards for a bit. I am becoming unhappy with Disney and I don't like it.

I was there late June we bought 5 earhats, and you could still get "basic" script writing on your ears free. They started charging for fancy fonts awhile back. But good ole disney script was always free.

I am probably in the minority here but it doesn't bother me. As long as it is less than 5 dollars. I have noticed the price on ears has gone up and it is kind of sad but in this day and age everything is getting more spendy. It won't affect me, I'll still buy my son yet another pair of ears because he loves them so much. His happiness is worth an extra three bucks to me :-)

My son got his name on his ears for free this week. We were at the hat shop on the way to Critter Country - sorry, I don't know the name of it!

I totally agree with you,,,you go to Disneyland to have fun and of course spend money,,,If we want something we buy it regardless of cost,,,thats why we work hard all year to have money to spend on vacation.....Three dollars is nothing...

I work hard all year and still will not spend 3.00 for writing on a hat. some people can afford such things other can not. For me, yeah I think its appalling to have to fork over 3.00 to write a name on a hat that takes only a few minutes.
have you heard the song I work for the money heck yeah and Im not forking over 3.00 for some thread !

We just got back from a visit and were surprised that they're charging $7 for the custom embroidery on hats. Our recollection is that this was free with the more expensive hats. I'm not talking about the basic manual embroidering done on the ear hats, but the custom stuff with selectable fonts and done by a computerized machine. I'll report back later after I go back to pick it up.

Update: this was a miscommunication between DW and a newbie CM, who said there was a "new policy starting today" without seeing the hat DW had bought. Turns out the hat was not suitable for the basic embroidery so it required the custom embroidery which was $7 even before today. One mystery solved, sort of.

It would never occur to me that they would do it for free. Personalization on everything else, everywhere else costs extra, why would you expect Disney to be any different?

I honestly don't have a problem with this. Disney needs to make their money some way too, and having to start charging for a service makes sense to me...and $3 seems to be a fairly resonable price to me.

$3 is going to make a difference? I'm amazed it was ever free. It's a personalized service, why wouldn't you have to pay extra for it?

So it sounds like the standard name embroidering that has been offered for years is still free, but there are specialty fonts that can be requested for an additional fee? Is that correct?

No, the basic embroidery that has always been free, going back to when Walt walked the part, now costs $3. So much for that warm fuzzy feeling.

Hey, at least DL still has a free marching band, unlike WDW, which canned theirs in Y2K. (Knock on wood.)

Someone posted that they got their ears personalized for free just this last week. I think the $3 thing is just a rumor of things to come at this point. Either way $3 is cheap for personalization.

I agree. And if 3 dollars makes or breaks that sale then maybe one shouldn't be buying souvenirs and should save that money. I also agree with pp's that say its a service and a darn neat one and I'm surprised they did it for free for such a long time. That was nice of them but reality has caught up to it now. I can't wait to see the neat fonts in 2 weeks.
