Bringing wine onboard...

My SIL is planning to bring a 'few" bottles of wine onboard. The wine will be packaged in good size boxes - they can be carried but they are big. Does she have to bring them as a carry-on or can they be put with luggage at embarkation? Will the porters handle them with care, knowing it is breakable?? Has anyone else done this??
Thanks for the input!!

Disney wants any and all beverages to be carried on as carry on luggage, NOT CHECKED LUGGAGE. You are not supposed to leave any beverages with the porters.

And if a porter does take them, there is no guarantee that they will be gentle with them. You will see posts where people state that the porters took their cases/boxes of beverages with no problem but they really are not supposed to and I would hate to see DCL take away the perk of allowing us all to bring our own beverages onboard if people don't follow the guidelines. The porters are working for tips so if asked they most likely will take the beverages but again, they are not supposed to.

we pack mountain dew and a case of water in our suitcase because you can't bring them as carry on. Once we get to Orlando do we have to remove them from our luggage and put into carry on? It would be easier if we could just leave them in the suitcase.

Okay - that's what I needed to know. We have never tried to carry beverages onboard before so I didn't know what the rukes were. I will let her know.
Hmmm...sounds like we may have to "reduce" the number of bottles of wine while we are in WDW before the cruise.

Yes, you have to remove them from your luggage and carry them on to the ship.

Or just bring an extra carry on bag to put the wine in!!! I usually put my drinks in a rolling duffle bag or wheeled carryons bag devoted just to drinks...I use bubble wrap.

Thanks - a wheeled carry on might be the best idea since we have two REALLY BIG cases of wine sitting in my living room (we're driving; she's flying - that's why its at our house!!) Is there a max size for a carry on for embarkation?? (not kidding...)

It has to fit through a standard airport sized x-ray scanner. You can find dimensions at the TSA website.

Also, it's not a good idea to put a bottle of red wine in your luggage.

On embarkation day at Port Canaveral, we saw a passenger holding his suitcase over the gutter as red wine leaked from it. Not the way to start a cruise.

Per DCL policy on their website...

Quote:
Alcohol is permitted on board. However, be aware that any fragile items (including bottled alcohol) must be hand-carried on board in a day bag and/or carry-on bag, the dimensions of which cannot exceed 22" wide, 14" high and 9" deep.

Also note the following that is noted on the same page. Please be advised: Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to remove fragile items (including beverages) from luggage. In such cases, items will be stored and returned at the end of the voyage. Beverage containers are considered fragile and have previously caused damage in checked luggage. All fragile items must be transported inside carry-on luggage.
