We'll always have (DLR)Paris!

Hi, I'm Danielle, aka Dwheatl (rhymes with Beatle, yeah, yeah, yeah), and this is my mini-DLRP trip report.

DH and I will be married 25 years in December, and we agreed awhile ago that we would visit Europe for our 25th anniversary. Since we are both teachers, we are limited to the times that we could make this trip. You know the arguments on the boards about whether it's OK to pull your kid out of school to go to on vacation? Not an option for teachers. Rather than go during the holidays and have to squeeze the trip in, we decided to do a summer trip. With other responsibilities sprinkled throughout the summer, we carved out some time at the beginning of July for our vacation.

We found a trip through Costco that sounded good, four nights in London, then four nights in Paris. That seemed so short, though. I asked DH if we could add a night in each city. He's very easy-going when I'm planning our vacations, so he said sure, why not. Since my luck was so good, I thought I'd push it.

"What if we did a day in Disneyland Paris?" I asked. He asked how far it was. "Not far," I said. "Just about a half hour by train." He agreed. Now you know why we've been able to make it to (almost) 25 years of marriage - he's my Disney addiction enabler. That, and he's the handsomest, sweetest, sexiest guy I know (just in case he's reading).

Now that DH agreed to a day, I asked about 2 days. And when I found out that we could get a free night in London on our way back home (courtesy of British Airways), I asked if we could do 3 days in the parks, then take the late (7:30 p.m) Eurostar back to London, and fly out the next morning. DH said yes. Sweet!

And that is how our 8 day trip turned into a 2 week dream vacation.

Here we are on a bus trip to Stonehenge, just after arriving in London.

Now that you know who we are, I'm going to have to stop until tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Hi Danielle

Great start and I love the photo of you and DH at one of my very favourite places (luckily I don't live far from Stonehenge)

I'm just going to move this over to our very own Trip Reports section but I'll leave a link so you can find it easily.

Her dh is one of the nicest men I have ever met. Who else would take their wife all the way across the country just to meet a bunch of limeys? Just hanging with the dwheatl's for a few days you can't help but see why they have been together for so long. They are wonderful people and I them both so much.

I do hope you do write a TR for your whole trip. I loved seeing the pictures but I really would love to read the story behind them.. Even the soda can

Our plan was to fly in on a red-eye, get some sleep, and awaken in London. Two problems with that: 1) British Airways booked my husband in a seat that he could not change, but did not hold a seat for me, and there were no seats available next to him. So as soon as we got on the plane, we had to find someone to switch seats with. The staff was very nice, and they were able to work it out for us. 2) The people on our row but across the aisle from us had a baby in a bassinet that cried through the night. The parents were able to sleep through this, with the dad occasionally reaching out a hand to pat the baby, but nothing more. I was so tempted to say, “Pick her up!” I even would have offered to hold her myself, seeing as I was awake anyway! But I didn’t, and the upshot is, DH and I got about 3 hours sleep that night. We were a little zombie-ish our first couple of days in London.

There was so much to see in London, we really tried to pack it in. The afternoon that we got in, we jumped on the Tube and hit the British Museum. Loved seeing the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin marbles, and many other ancient and incredible artifacts.

We were in a daze from a lack of sleep, so we found a restaurant around the corner from our hotel, and got to sleep at a normal-for-London time.

Our first full day, we had a bus trip booked to see the town of Bath, with it’s ancient Roman temple, Stonehenge, and Salisbury Cathedral, a 750 year old church with the highest spire in England, and which houses one of the original copies of the Magna Carta.

At Bath, we had to laugh at the ancient worshipers of the goddess Minerva, because they reminded me of my grandma. They used to throw sacrifices into the waters of the temple, and write curses against people who had wronged them. For instance, “Minerva, someone stole my purse full of coins. Please curse them so that they never know a day of happiness again in their life.” 2000 years later, from my grandma, “Someone stole my wallet. Whoever took it, I hope they choke on it.” We haven’t changed much in all that time, have we?
Here’s some pictures from that day.

Bath – the water is no longer treated, so there are signs not to touch it. Do you think that stopped people? Of course not!

Salisbury Cathedral, with its very tall spire. One of the young women on the tour bus never returned. We waited and looked up and down the street for her. Wonder what happened to her?

Stonehenge, with beautiful silver-lined clouds in the background.

We got off the tour bus near our hotel, found an Indian restaurant nearby, and had dinner. Where we live, Indian restaurants are very reasonable. At this one, we spent about $10 just on bottled water. We learned a lesson and carried a bottle and refilled it several times for the rest of the trip.

We walked back to our hotel and wound our way back to our room. Our hotel was a series of Edwardian townhouses that had been connected to form the hotel, so getting to our room meant going up five flights of stairs, then winding our way down several hallways, opening and closing seven fire doors along the way. There was an elevator near our room, but it rarely worked. We found out on our fifth night that there was another elevator near the front door. It would have been nice to have found out a little sooner.

There was a treat for us in our room that night. For most of our London visit, the room was extremely quiet, but this night was the Fourth of July, and some kindly soul set off fireworks right outside our window. How do you think they knew we were Yanks?

Alright, I won't be making a post for every day of our stay (I'll combine days), but it's hot tonight and the laptop is cooking my lap. See you real soon!
