Veterans....when do Resorts book up?

Well - I stayed at my last company 11 years...and had 4 weeks vacation...but got a MUCH better job in July....So will have technically no vaca till next July...

Meanwhile....DS is graduating from High School in May...and I've found out a bunch of his Friends & their parents are planning a Senior Trip to WDW, probably leaving around May 7 or so...and arriving back in time for 5/17 graduation.

I will try to negotiate some special time off for this...but can't obviously do it this early...need to wait at least till 2010...

If I am able to do so...I will want to stay ONSITE....DS will want BC...Friends are staying at Poly...I might like to try any other new Resort for us...(AKL, WL, CS....etc)

Does anyone know when the resorts sell out? Probability of us even getting a resort?

Also our last visit was July '08....what are the new rules for ADR's...is there anything else I would need to know for a May 7-16 (thereabouts) visit in 2010?

TIA!

Hugs,
Mary

I think that changes all the time so there's not a way to predict it. It can depend on the specific resort, the category of resorts, what specials Disney is running, the time of year you want to stay...

For example....say you wanted a room at POFQ for this coming weekend...you might be able to get it. The next weekend, which is Thanksgiving weekend.....prob not a chance.

Sorry, not helpful, but I doubt anyone could really help you on that one.

Aw no prob.

Just try to book as early as you can, and know that the closer the dates get, the more limited your choices are...which at some times can be more limited than others!

If OP just booked the resort, didn't buy tickets or anything, couldn't OP then cancel the reservation without any penalty if she couldn't get the time off of work?

We have booked a trip in the past and then not been able to do it. We had to put down the $200, I think it was, at that time, for the package. What we did was just push the vacation out a year. That way, we did not lose our money. We knew we would be going again....and we did. So, that is definitely an option! Of course, if you completely cancel the vacation, I'm not sure if you lose the money or not. I can't imagine ever completely cancelling, though, when you can always push it out. We've since joined the DVC and that is a completely different story. I'm not sure I don't like the old way better in that respect, although I love being part of the DVC!

Great Idea !

WOW - Now that's a GREAT idea...

I didn't think about that...

So I could go ahead and book my resort....maybe in January for May 2010...

Put $200 Down....

Then if for some reason I absolutely can NOT negotiate the time off....well...I will get my "One Week" vacation after one year of service...which would be July...so I could perhaps just push my ressie back to July or August....(July is the month we would normally go anyway....the heat doesn't bother me...nor the lines)

Then wait to buy my tix/DD plan for the May trip if it looks as though that's going to 'happen'....

Is that what you mean?

Thanks SO much ...Great idea!

If you book a room only reservation you have to put down one nights worth to save the room. I think you have 7 days before checkin to cancel (used to be 48 hours, this may have changed again). If you book a WDTC package (room + tickets and/or dining plan) you put down $200 deposit, the remainder is due 45 days out from check in, you can cancel 45 + days out and you get your full deposit back, under 45 days and there is penalties (you will still get some back, not full). So as others have said I would go ahead and book what you want now if you know the dates.

As far as resorts completely booking up I dont know if they do that anymore except for Christmas week. You can probably get a room in about any deluxe at some point in time (i've never heard they were all full), the values book up sometimes in addition to Christmas (like pop warner, free dining, etc), but if you are flexible w/ resort and room type you need you could realisticlly wait until the last minute for those weeks and still get a room. Of course you will PAY big time for it, it will be rack rate at last minute, but Disney always has something or another left over here and there.

The resorts book up. I am trying to book a one night reservation at any of my prefered hotels for one night in January and they are all sold out already. There is slim pickings left like CL GF, junior suite at CSR, cash rate studios at SSR... nothing I'm interested in at this point.

So, as with other PPs... I say you should go ahead and book the dates you know you want and where you want. If you need to cancel the reservation, just make sure to do it before the 45 day mark is up!

It depends on the resort at that time of year..In the hotter months, Beach Club and yacht club are really popular because of the pool. There are also really popular during the Food and Wine fest because of the location to Epcot.WL is harder to get around the Christmas holidays.

but there are some rooms left, just not where you want, right? That was the point I made. Thanks for repeating it.

Resort

As long as we can stay on-site....

My off-site days are OVER and long gone...

DS will want BC ....he hates change and that's where we've stayed for the last 3 visits....
plus this is his first ever trip with friends...(the other High School Graduates) and he will probably want to show off how much he knows his way around

But I heard from another student the plan is to stay at POLY...

I love BC and POLY...but now that I'm on disboards I am really wanting to branch out and try new things...so I don't care where we end up...

Thanks so much for all the advice.... So I will find out if it's $200 or One night of the stay to reserve the trip... and perhaps add in the DD and Tix later...

But there's usually a sweet spot for booking. I mean right now the discounts are for March. If a discount comes out for your date, you'll want to book it that day - or even before that discount comes out- but you don't need to book it quite yet. Once a deal comes out for certain dates, then stuff tends to go quickly.

May doesn't tend to be a peaked out time.

Also, as with ANY trip - flexible dates really help. This is also true when considering your airfare.
The new ADR rules are 180 days out. But often most of the year SOMETHING is left up until the last minute. The closer you can be to 180 days the better your odds of getting the ADR's you really want. The parent website of the DIS has a great tool to calucate when you can call ofr ADR's. (When the 180 day mark is.)

Discounts

Thanks a bunch!

When you say "Discounts" is that what I usually see advertised on Television? or is there a way to subscribe or receive discounts a better way...

We've never really paid attention to Discounts since there are 5 in the family and since 3 are 'teen's that are really 'adults' ...we don't qualify...

However with me44 and DS 18 ...I might be able to take advantage of something for a change....

And that would be Great !
