Adding on at "sold out" resort or more BLT???

We are new DVC members who bought 180 points at BLT this winter and already have add-on-itis So we're thinking we want 50-70 more points to allow for longer vacations and/or a 1 bedroom. We stayed at BWV with our BLT incentive and really loved it and are thinking it might be a great place to split stays and/or alternate years. My questions are:
How difficult would it be to add-on BWV through Disney?
Would there be a wait for use year and contract size?
Is it better to have a large contract in one resort (all BLT) and then try to book BWV at 7 mos.?
All thoughts and opinions are welcome!!
Thank you!

If you are looking for a smaller contract or bigger one for that matter then you are probably better off looking at the resale market. I have purchsed through Disney and through the resale market (twice). There will probably not be any incentives offered through Disney for a BWV purchase. Therefore, you will pay full price. The benefit is that you will not have to wait and go through the right of first refusal (ROFR) process and you will not pay any closing costs because you are already a member. You will also be able to request what use year (UY) you want to keep everything under one contract number. When I added on through Disney they simply checked their inventory for the resort I requested along with the UY and the exact number of points I wanted. It was available so it was mine. I have heard of people having to wait for certain resorts to be available, but I don't know how long or how true.

With the resale market you simply look for what resort you want and try and find a contract with the number of points you want. Finding the same UY can be harder, but you don't have to have the same UY. All three of my contracts are the same UY though. The biggest benefit is the price. You will see a significant difference in price from resale to Disney. You will have to pay closing costs (price varies based on contract), but you could request the seller to pay them. We used the Time Share Store (Jason) and had no problems. You will probably find yourself looking at larger point contracts because of the price difference. For example what you pay for 75 points through Disney will probably get you 100 points through resale.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

I originally started out with small resale contract (50 points) at VWL so I could buy in to BLT with less points and figured I would just do the split stay thing and then if I wanted to be at BLT the whole time, I would hope for it at 7 months.

What I found was that it made it difficult, when I was starting to look at planning for the future, to do it the way I wanted. I didn't have enough points with the small contract to book what I wanted without borrowing, something I wasn't interested in.

So, I ended up selling the VWL and re-bought the points at BLT. Now I have all of them in one resort and can book what I want there at 11 months. If I want to trade out at 7, I can and I am finding it to be flexible.

If you want BWV, especially to stay during food and wine, I would look into resale. Disney will be easier but more expensive. But, be sure you get enough points in that contract to book what you want.

Good luck!

Thank you both for the replies! Our original plan when we first started looking at DVC was to buy a resale BWV and then purchase a smaller add-on for BLT. When the DVC resort stay came as an incentive we revised said plan....Your point about looking for enough points to stay where and when we want is a good one...hmmm

We started with a 100 point resale contract at BWV and then added on BLT. We wanted to be able to book boardwalk view at BWV and MK view at BLT. To make sure you can get it, you need to be able to book at the 11 month mark. We saved around $20 a point to go resale, although it did take 60 days, so you have to be patient! It would probably be easier to do a resale the first contract since you will not be locked into a specific use year. Once you have a specific use year, it may be a little harder to get the resale contract you want. Also, if you plan to add on a small contract, then buying a resale means you will have to pay between $300 and $400 in closing costs, which is equivalent to $6-$8 a point on a 50 point contract, so be sure to factor that into the equation.
