Alaskan Cruise Photo Trip Report: updated 8/24/09

So DW and I decided to go on a family cruise with my brother, sister-in-law, niece, my parents, and my dad's dad (grandfather.) We decided to go on an Alaskan cruise sailing out of Seattle. Almost all of these photos were taken with my Pentax K100D, but there were a couple times when DW's Canon SX110 IS came in handier.

Pre-Day 1:
This is the jet that we flew out of Little Rock, AR to Houston, TX in. At first I was worried that it wouldn't get us off the ground. THEN I was worried that we wouldn't get BACK on the ground. I didn't get take a picture of our jet out of Houston because we were running too hard.

Day 1:
Some of the views from the ship when we boarded...

It was pretty hazy that day, but if you squint right about the machinery you can see Mt. Rainier in the background.

Probably the only shot that you'll see of me or my brother on this trip report, but you can see what a great big brother he is here... (look above my head and you can see the tips of his fingers.)

Next up... Day two and three with sea shots and Juneau, AK

Hope you get more up today. We leave for Alaska tomorrow and maybe I can get some ideas from yours! We fly into Fairbanks for 3 nights, 2 nights in Denali and then to the ship in Whittier on Saturday and sail to Vancouver.

Which ship were you on? We'll be on the Sapphire Princess which is the one that caught the whale in its bow yesterday coming into Vancouver.

I'm planning on giving my camera a good workout while up there -- I think I've got 44 gigs of memory cards!

Ok... so day two we were at sea and there wasn't a whole lot going on. We were on the Rhapsody of the Seas. My brother and I found this lounge that we nicknamed the "Perch" because it was on deck 12 (the top deck) and it had panoramic windows in 360 degrees so we could look out over the whole ship and the ocean. We "saw" several whales on our trip, but the part that you usually saw was the blow when they came to the surface and if you were really lucky you might get to see the tail fin.

Day 3 we went to Juneau, AK which is the capital (didn't get to see Sarah Palin) but we did get to take a bus over to the Mendenhall glacier. That was absolutely beautiful.

Pulling into port...

This gives you an idea of the "Perch". it was just like this all the way around and in the center of the room was a bar and at one end there was a piano.

Here was where we got to the Mendenhall Glacier.

Some fish-eye action. I bought this lens before this trip and was anxious to use it on this trip.

Here's a piece of the glacier that my brother found at the edge of the water. After we took this picture, we found a family with a disabled son that we gave this to so they could enjoy it.

I'm looking forward to Mendenhall Glacier. I've been checking the live web cam every day. Did you walk any of the trails there?

I walked a LITTLE bit of the trails, mainly from the parking lot to the water. It was pretty. The big thing was when we got up closer to the water, there was this huge rock/boulder that was about 20 ft high that we wanted to climb to the top to see what the view was and get some shots. You can see from DW, she was excited to be at the top.

And here is kind of a view from the top.

It wasn't until we got to the top and looked on the other side, that we saw a concrete sidewalk complete with rails that walked right past this rock and it gave an easier access to the top where we were. D'oh!

So on day 4, we stopped in Skagway Alaska which was a neat little town. I think they said the population was around 800-900 when everyone is there. What we decided to do was take this tour on the White Pass Railroad. It heads north for about 50 miles, into Canada (about 100 yards) and then comes back. The following is from around the town and the train ride. DW and my brother decided to ride most of the train ride OUTSIDE... in ALASKA... WITHOUT jackets... WITH SNOW EVERYWHERE AND THE WIND HITTING THEM!!

The original track went this way, but was later changed.

A self-portrait

And who knew I was famous! We have a lake named after us up there!! My brother took this photo.

I really DO want to live there!
I circulate my paper clips at work so they all get used or I feel like they'd be sad if they didn't get a "turn".

We're leaving for this same cruise in 3 weeks!!! Can't wait! Thanks for the TR. We're also doing the White Pass train ride.

What ship were you on?
