All this upgrade bitterness is ridiculous
and perhaps this has been said already on the many different threads, but I can't make it through reading half of them.
Sorry if this is lengthy... I just need to say this... to someone... even if just to myself. So read if you want to ![]() First of all, getting upgraded from a value doesn't mean that you cannot afford to stay at SSR. It means that you CHOOSE to stay at Value, for whatever reason. My husband and I both make good money, live in a large house, our kids wear name brand clothing and we drive new cars. But we clip coupons, buy on clearance, shop around and price match. Why? Because we are smart with our money. I feel like there are alot of people acting like 7th graders in the junior high cafeteria and us "outsiders" are trying to sit at their table And how dare we, right? Never once have I seen on the WDW site that if you book a room at a Deluxe resort, you will have it all to yourself and the other secret club members who happen to be staying during that time. I thought it was open to anyone? I thought it was a Disney hotel and that Disney had the right to open it to whomever they want to with whatever discount they choose to offer? For people who don't like Disney and their policies, why not start going to Sea World instead? That way, the whole place smells like fish and you won't be able to tell the difference between Ritz or Red Roof Inn guests. ![]() As far as my family goes, we loved staying at the Movies resort, and will probably continue to do so. Not because we are in such dire straits that we have to stay there, but because we want to. Obviously if we can spend ten days in Feb and 14 days in Sept and now another 14 in Dec, we can't be THAT hard off, right? But yet, because we chose to stay at the values, we're below some people evidently. I am now able to stay nearly 6 weeks in Disney this year for the same price as staying 10 nights at a Deluxe. I'd rather save a few thousand bucks on a room that I'll never see and be able to eat at any restaurant we feel like eating or buy my kids the best princess dress they sell... because once you come home, what does it matter where you slept? Maybe to some it does, but to me it doesn't. It's personal preference. And I prefer to use that money elsewhere. That doesn't mean I can't afford to stay somewhere else, and it certainly doesn't make me some kind of trailer park trash coming to invade the precious space of those who can afford the "high life". I'm happy to be receiving the upgrade, and I'm sure those who are mad have had some sort of upgrade, freebie, prize or something in their life. I really enjoy being here in the DIS and the majority of people here make people feel welcome and are genuinely happy when someone gets a little extra pixie dust. But some just have to be so self-centered that can't see beyond their own little cloud of selfishness. Shame on those folks... you know who you are. Since you're so upset about Disney handing out discounts, maybe you should just cancel and come back another time when no discounts are offered... since money is no object. This is just really sad that people actually act like this.

Sometimes it's hard to be happy for those who got something that you could have used as well, but weren't offered. I seriously doubt that anyone here is jealous or selfish....I did see both those words used in other threads about this.
But people have to understand how others may feel. Isn't it okay for them to vent as well?? I own DVC....I love my DVC. But...I also love my POP as well. I seldom stay at any moderate or deluxe resorts at WDW anymore. If I'm not staying on points, I head to a value..POP if I can get it, otherwise Music. I do feel badly for those who paid top dollar for a DVC resort only to have those who paid value rates get moved there. Yes, it's nice and magical for those who got upgraded but it's a huge price difference. There are always going to be those who gripe and complain about what everyone else has or is getting. Best to just let them whine and move along. Believe it or not...there are actually DVC owners that complain because they can't get free dining. You are never going to make everyone happy!!! |

I agree. I've just about had it with all the negativity that has taken over these boards. I don't want to leave, but thinking it may be time to find a new online community.

First off, cudos for the post, maybe a little too much personal info, but good post. Agree 100% with the jealousy issue, absolutely ridiculous. Never feel it necessary to justify where you stay. Although we can share a bottle of wine arguing the merits of a deluxe versus a value, at the end of the evening it's about what you want to do. Sounds like you have a great plan. In fact, you guys should be looking at DVC if you have the time to go three times a year. Seriously. DW and I did the math and our VLW contract pays for itself in less than eight years. Commercial over! ![]() To point - I'm with you on the ridiculous and childish comments made. Unless Disney takes something away from you, you have nothing to complain about. What a bunch of sore losers. As a DVC owner, it can be argued - and some have - that I am getting the short end of the deal. I don't see it that way. I think it's great some folks got an upgrade and I hope they have the time of thier lives. Best wishes for lots of Disney Magic for your family. My family has certainly been blessed with its share of magic!

OP, I am happy for you. I know how it feels to be upgraded-when it happened to me, I was grinning like a fool for the whole day!
![]() ![]() To me, these upgrades were like winning a prize-some people will win, some won't. And I think it's terrible to resent someone for winning something, just because they chose to stay in a value. I guess jealousy is just one of those human emotions that pops up every now and then. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about receiving the upgrade.

Congrats on getting upgraded to SSR. I think the upgrades are a VERY smart marketing tool because they probably target families like yours with the hope that you will stay DVC, tour DVC, and buy DVC. Very smart indeed. And don't be surprised if, as much as you like the cute theming at the All Stars and POP, you don't start thinking about how nice it would be to stay DVC regularly.
I rented points from a coworker and that was when the DVC bug bit me. It was a very good decision. If you are smart with your money, as you claim, then the idea of prepayed vacations may appeal to you. I joined DVC 18 months ago and I have had 3 very fun DVC vacations - SSR, Vero Beach, and AKL. Really top notch accomodations that I would not normally spend the $ for because I, like you, don't think an expensive room necessarily adds to the value of a vacation. And as much as I like DVC, that's not going to stop me from doing free dining at POP this September!

I agree 110% with your post. Very well said. I stay at values because my kids like them. And because it means I can take them more often and for longer periods of time.

I agree with everything you said. We go to Disney every year, sometimes twice a year. We almost always stay at Pop. Sure we could afford to stay somewhere more expensive but our kids really enjoy Pop and we are only there to sleep. We got the upgrade to SSR and we have been contemplating purchasing DVC for a while now. I see it as a great way for our family to see if it something we really want to consider. I think it is smart on Disney's part and we are extremely grateful and excited!

I obviously missed some prior discussion
But with that being said, DW and I just love the WL and that is why we bought into DVC there. We stayed there twice before buying into DVC not just because we could afford it, but because that was the theming that most attracted us. Now we love being DVC members because we love having the full kitchen and a washer and dryer in our room. We have no problem whatsoever with you being upgraded to a DVC resort and hope you will enjoy your stay.

I do think I have a right to be bitter.
My wife and I work hard, and we are by no means well off. We have no kids and our one splurge is a trip to Disney World. I originally booked at POFQ, but we decided that we should treat so I booked at Boardwalk and ended up paying $1000.00 more for the trip. I don't expect nor do I request upgrades. I knowing paid more money for what I know to be a superior experience. I understand Disney is doing something smart for business, but I think it would be more fair to move those in Moderates first and then if there is room, move the value guests up. What about the person spending $149.00 to stay at POFQ and the person staying up the river at OKW is only paying $69.00? This sense of entitlement that people that pay $69.00 a night at POP deserve the same treatment as someone who pays $300+ at a Deluxe is a great example of a much larger problem this country faces. /rant

Ok so you make decent money - think you mentioned that a few times, probably a few times too many unless you were trying to make yourself look better?? .. I do feel the true colors of many people are coming out over this and you did the same thing: trailer park trash I am sure those that live in trailer parks don't appreciate being referred to as trash but hey you can spend 6 weeks at Disney so apparently you are better then everyone else???? No you didn't say you are but to me that is how your post is coming across. Jealousy is such a wasted emotion ![]() ![]() Then again, bragging about oneself or gloating can also be very 7th gradish Hope everyone enjoys their upcoming Disney vacations regardless of when you go and where you stay.... Signed by someone who booked SSR 2bedroom and is paying for that 2bedroom - well minus 40% thanks to military recognition Last edited by JoanneNC; 07-24-2009 at 09:47 PM. |
