Does the fuel injector cleaner that you put in your gas tank actually do anything?

I recently had my car in for some warranty work and while it was in they did a free 34 point inspection or something like that. As part of the inspection they suggested that I run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through it. I asked if it was because of any problem that they saw, but they told me that it was just because of the mileage.

Does that sort of fuel injector cleaner really do anything useful or is it just a waste of money?

ETA, I just found a rebate from autozone for a free bottle of Prestone fuel injector cleaner here...

So I guess I'll try it as long as it's free and see if it helps. I'd still like to hear people's opinions on the stuff, though.

I think that's the stuff my dad gave me about 8-10 years ago to put in the gas tank of my older Honda. Our cars up here have to pass Air Care, and if they fail then you have to spend a certain amount of money to fix them (I think it's about $200). I put it in for one or two years and then I think I forgot the next time and it failed the Air Care. I ended up buying a new car.

If you maintain your car regularly (oil and filter changes, x,000 mile service), you probably don't need the additive.

If you use cheap gas all the time, the additive does provide some benefit.

Brand name gas stations (Hess, Mobil, Exxon, etc.) blend their gasoline with detergents and other additives, allegedly to save you the trouble, but mainly to increase their profitability. So you wouldn't need to add the fuel injector cleaner.

My FIL who worked for GM always told us to run a gallon of the high octane gas in your car and that does what the fuel injector cleaner is supposed to do.

My BIL used to do that before inspections of his truck.

It makes sense - the higher octane burns cleaner and the premium fuels has more additives. Certainly easier than purchasing/using the bottle of fuel injection cleaner. Great suggestion.

Yes it most definitly works. I recently did this and it would normally take me a full tank of gas to get back and forth to work in a week. I still had over 1/4tank of gas left when I got home today. Over the course of a month that will be a full tank of gas saved! It was only a couple of bucks at Wal Mart. I have about 88,000 miles on my car.
