La Hacienda or San Angel Inn?

Help me choose. Which do you like better? I have one week before I must make ADR's. My family (2 adults and 2 kids - 16 and 13). We look mexican food but have not eaten at either of these places. Thanks!!!

San Angel might be a more unique setting (inside the Mexico pavilion overlooking the boat ride, but la Hacienda has a very nice water view.

La Hacienda has a more "Americanized" Mexican menu. San Angel is much more traditional and tends to have dishes you don't normally see in most Mexican restaurants. (Don't go there expecting to eat nachos, beef tacos and churros)
La hacienda is slightly more typical so be sure to check out the menus.

it really depends on personal preferences if San Angel is "different good" or "different bad" for your family.

(fixing my original post that got deleted as a double)
San Angel Inn serves food in the style of northern Mexico, while La Hacienda has food more in the style of central and southern Mexico. I'm not an expert on what those styles are, but this is something one of the managers told me when I dined at La Hacienda during its very first week in operation four years ago.

My personal preference is for La Hacienda, even if just due to the atmosphere. Also, I find the service there excellent. Esmeralda is my favorite server. She's been there from the beginning, so she isn't going away at the end of her year's contract.

so the differences may be more related to geography than "authenticity".

We like both. I agree that it is not your typical Americanized "Tex -Mex" food you get at most Mexican restaurants here. If that is what you are hoping for you will be disappointed in both.
I think I prefer La Hacienda. The food was delicious and the restaurant is beautiful.

San Angel Inn, by far.

We love both, but San Angel Inn is more authentic, traditional Mexican fare.

We love Mexican food but my son (13) does not like anything too spicy so I am hoping we can get something with less of a kick to it. We are on the dining plan and I wonder is there anything your teen children loved in particular?

My girlfriend doesn't like things too spicy, all of her food was prepped 'mildly' and she enjoyed it.

I find San Angel Inn (the one in the pavilion?) to be gross. We tried the outdoor place ate lunchtime, and it was pretty decent, it's qs at Lunch, which we liked.

A lot of the negative reviews come from people who hear 'Mexican' food and picture Don Pablos and their local 'Mexican' favorite at home.
Taco's, enchiladas and fajitas are generic 'Mexican' and the majority of Mexican restaurants in the states cater to unknowing non-Mexicans who are actually enjoying Tex-Mex at their local Mexican restaurant.
San Angel is traditional Mexican fare

to the above...not mine I live in a university town, and have tried a variety of real, actual mexican foods, in addition to having a couple of close friends from Mexico..... that food in San Angel was not mexican food. My then toddler son liked the (unbelievably ordinary straight from a bag) corn chips basket- All I'm trying to say is I personally hated the place, that doesn't mean others agree, since we all have different tastes... IMHO what they served in there tasted like freezer entree from Sams club....

My comment was in general. If you check the actual review sections, you'll see A LOT of people referencing Mexican restaurants like 'On The Boarder' and 'Don Pablos' being far better, etc. That's why I added my comment, not as a follow up to yours. If it was, I would've quoted or referenced yours.

As for the food in San Angel Inn not being Mexican food... I've lived in Tijuana, Torreon and Merida when our family launched facilities in Mexico. The food in San Angel is real Mexican food

This. We loved it but it is more traditional mexican dishes, not the typical tacos and burritos you would find at an Americanized mexican place. We loved the margaritas and I had the traditional mexican platter which was awesome.
