Hotels in New York?

Hi all

Can anyone recommend some hotels in New York please? I'm helping a friend plan a trip and while I used to live near new york (Albany) I always stayed with my college roomie at her house in Brooklyn or over the river in NJ, so I'm hopeless with hotels. They are a young couple (mid twenties) and are smart travelers but haven't been to the USA before. They won't have a car and wanna spend most of the 10 days in NYC itself, seeing sights, going to theatre, etc. I'm looking for good, safe location that doesn't cost the earth. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

x

Just checked with my sister who loves to vacation in NYC. After several trips she's settled on a favorite hotel and has enjoyed five stays there. It's the Salisbury Hotel on 57th, 2 blocks south of Central Park, 2 blocks (in one of the other directions?!) from 5th Avenue, and about 12 blocks to the theater section. She told me that though it's in a high rent district, the Salisbury is an older, smaller hotel (and somewhat less expensive) than some in the area, but said that it's very nice and centrally located for lots of sight-seeing opportunities. She strongly feels it is in a safer area than the hotels in Time Square. She mentioned looking for deals connected with the length of stay and I noticed on the web site that there was a 30% discount for 3 + nights. http://www.nycsalisbury.com

You might also tell them to take a look at the Gabby Cabby's site. He's a little bit of a celebrity himself, having been on lots of TV and radio interviews. Sally and her friends spent a day in his cab a trip or two back and thoroughly enjoyed their time on his tour. She said he'll backtrack to any place you want to revisit or spend more time, etc. http://gabby.com

Hope this helps or at least gives your friends a place to start looking.

My mum and I stayed at The Novatel in Times Sq and loved it, it has the most incredible views of Times Sq and is in a central location. It was a really nice hotel and I would def stay there again

When we went we stayed in the Metropolitan hotel, which was nice & has since undergone a refurb. It was on Lexington Ave & 51st or 53rd Street

At Easter my DD and I stayed at the Westin, Times Square. We didn't really think we could justify the money being asked for it, but I spent ages on the internet just constantly checking (as I do with all holidays) and one day it just popped up with a really good price.

It is a fab hotel, fantastic rooms (we were on the 41st floor with the most amazing views of TS and the Empire State Building), the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and everything was in walking distance.

When I last stayed there, I resided in the Upper East Side Marriott on Lexington Avenue, it was quite convenient I found. Just a block or two along from Grand Central and the Chrysler Building (love that building!!!).

and very well placed for a lot of the attractions, such as 5th Avenue, Empire State and Times Sq.

I stayed at the Millenium Hilton which is right on Ground Zero. I can honestly say it's the best hotel I've ever stayed in! While it's not on Times Square it's not that far out and had great views out over the river.

If I ever go back there I'd want to stay here again. Would definitely recommend it

We're going for our first trip to New York in just over two weeks, and had the same problems of not knowing hotels etc, when I'm used to Orlando hotels and know them inside out by now.
What we did was look at tripadvisor, and went down the list looking for the highest ranked (user reviewed) hotels that we could afford. We went for the New York Palace in the end, can't wait!!

Hi guys

Hoping you can help again. I've looked at the hotels mentioned and it seems really expensive. It's working out at £130 a night at most places minimum (approx $200 a night). Even with a flight package it's the same. I'm used to finding hotels for nearer $90-150 a night. Is this just that the prices have gone up so much or is it cause it's NY City? Can anyone suggest a safe alternative? Maybe somewhere not quite times square but walkable or travelable easily and safely to all the sights? The don't have a car. Thank you

x

NYC is one of those US cities (like Washington, D.C. and San Francisco) that has very expensive lodging. Afraid that even dodgy hotels can have a big price tag there. It would not be a good thing to have some one unfamiliar with the city and on foot, trying to get around if they're starting from a low rent hotel (low rent being a relative term). Have your friends looked in NYC hostels?

Also, my sister told me to tell you that the Gabby Cabby I mentioned in an earlier reply is regularly on BBC radio.
