Crowds during free dining

Thinking of planning a trip week of 8/23. I was able to get first choice resort as well as airfare, but was concerned about the crowds during free dining. My family is not participating free dining promo (would rather get discount on Wilderness Cabins), but being that we are traveling with our autistic son, we are concerned about the crowds. Haven't totally firmed up plans, would any veterans of free dining out there recommend that we go in early August instead? My son LOVES the TTA ride and it is closed until 8/24, believe it or not that's why I'm leaning toward the end of August! I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

We went last year during free dining and never waited more than 20 minutes for any ride. Most were walk on's.

The dinners were very crowded though. We are going back this year because we had such a great time ! Don't worry about the crowds!

Low crowds but very hot! We've been in August/September the last 3 years and the crowds are very reasonable. Restaurants will be crazy busy but not an issue for you if not doing the dining plan. Crowds will be heavier in early August, then taper off towards end of August into September. The reason Disney does Free Dining at this time of year is because it is slow and also during hurricane season.

I would think going around late Aug, there would be a high crowd with kids going back to school soon or whatever.. I was there for free dining and I will say " IT WAS A MADHOUSE " I can't remember when that was but it was really busy.. I love the free dining because I can get my Chili Cheese Dog at pop century every night after getting from the parks.....

Many schools in the south start back in mid or even early August, crowds should be moderate at best. We went Labor Day week with free food in 2007 and it was not bad at all.
I would be more worried about the heat and humidity. I don't really want to do that again anytime soon.

We have gone the past couple years during free dining in September, very little wait time for the rides. Last year during free dining in September, most rides were walk on.

This is great if you have little ones, you don't have to find differnt ways to keep them amused in line.
