Tutoring Hourly Rate?

I posted the same thread on the community board, but thought there would be a lot of parents here to help.
I am going to be doing tutoring for elementary-aged children this summer. It is my first experience with tutoring, and I have no idea what a typical per-hour rate is. The mother has said that money is not an issue, but I don't want to rip anyone off. If you have recently done tutoring or hired a tutor for your child, please help me out. Here is some relevant info:
- I live in CT (I know costs may vary geographically).
- I have my Master's degree in education and have been teaching in an elementary school for 5 years.
- I will be tutoring twin boys with similar needs, most likely at the same time. (This may be changed if it becomes a problem.) They need help with reading and math.

Thanks for any help you can give!

We had a wonderful time, but did have our moments!

Pretty much down to my hips on one side, but nice and perky on the other

It's really, really a regional thing.

During the years I was a SAHM, I tutored high school math. At $60 per hour, I was the cheapest tutor I knew; I know a number of people who charge upwards of $100 per hour. (That said, it's high school and it's Long Island-- the cost of living is through the roof.)

But at least it gives you a starting place.

I'm thinking of tutoring also this summer and asked a former coworker of mine, a teacher, how much she charged when she tutored. She only tutored in college before she began teaching and she charged $20/hour. I checked on craigslist to see if there were any tutor postings listed in my area and most are asking anywhere from $25-40/hour. This is near Hershey, Pa - that may make a difference.

I pay my daughter's tutor $45 an hour. I live in northwest NJ. She is a young, certified teacher and my daughter is just finishing 2nd grade (yeah - we're not done until June 24th!) Her mother is also a teacher with 38 years experience, a MEd and a certified Reading Specialist and she charges $55 an hour.

I have a Bachelor's in Elem. Ed. & a Master's in Reading.

I've been teaching 1st/2nd grade for 19 years.
I've thought about tutoring this summer for some extra WDW cash & I'd charge $40.00-$50.00/hour.

That's about the average rate here.

$40 an hour around here. I want to get one for my daughter but I can't bring myself to pay that much an hour.

As a certified special education teacher with almost 20 years of experience in the Philadelphia area, I wouldn't tutor for less than $85 an hour.

I guess I must have it pretty good here. I am paying a student teacher (from another class) $20 per hour to tutor my DD in math twice a week.

I was paying $40 an hour and then she reduced when it was more then I could keep up, Until I could register my dd in a charter onling cyber school I paid the $19 a month for time4learning for her. Then the school set up homebound at 5 hours a week.

With so many online programs for all levels, the tutors are becoming rare around our area, Times are tough, and the online is so accessable.

Speaking for myself, I would have to shoot myself before I home schooled my DD. That includes tutoring at home. We are just oil and water when it comes to that kind of thing and even homework is a struggle for us. I NEED someone to come over and do it for me and I am happy to pay someone.

Did you like the time4learning site? I need something for my 9yo daughter.

I charge $25/hr for elementary kids in math & reading, and that's for walking across the street to tutor them after school or else in the neighborhood library. I am about to take a friend's child who is in high school but lives 18 or so miles away from me, and I will be paid $40/hr for French. These sessions will most likely be 1.5 hrs each, and when I add my travel time and gas, it'll work out to about the same rate per hour of my time (close to $25), including the transportation. I checked ads in my area before I started and $25 seemed reasonable for elementary level. Rates were $20 to $35 around here, but with higher fees for higher grades. If the parent truly cannot afford it, I would consider bartering or charging $20. I have traded 2 hrs tutoring for a professional massage before!

In-person vs online

I would also add that my tutoring "clients" most definitely benefit from the personal interaction and coaching/mentoring aspect to our our tutoring sessions. A lot of kids need an extra adult who is on their side and it helps them to have that extra support in a tutor. I don't know if any online program can truly provide that, even if it is with a "live" person on the internet.
