Question Here's a June car rental puzzle for all you experts - UPDATE in Post 17

We like to rent a car when we go to DisneyWorld, but the prices this time ...

Our dates are:

Arrival Orlando/MCO - June 20 (@ 5 or 6pm)
Depart Orlando/MCO - June 29 (@ 5 or 6pm)

We prefer National. DH travels on business and has a few(at least 2, maybe 3) free days, plus he's an Emerald Club member and gets Emerald Reserve (complimentary upgrade) for no additional charge.

We don't have to pick up at MCO. If it's cheaper to pick up at Car Care Ctr or Dolphin the next day or something, we can do that. Since we're staying on-property, there's always ME.

My head hurts , the prices I could see when I checked were $$$$ . If you can figure out the cheapest way for us to rent from National, I'd be ever so grateful .

The free days with National can't be combined with any other discounts except for your emerald club member discount...and you can use up to three of the free days on that one rental. So those free days are certainly going to be the cheapest way to go with National...renting from the car care center will most likely be cheapest for you since you'll be knocking off some of your rental time (picking up the day after and presumably returning the night before).

Definitely check the rates of Airport vs. either the Dolphin/Swan location or the Car Rental Center (near the Magic Kingdom). While the rates to rent away from the Airport used to be cheaper (even a few less taxes), I'm not finding that to be true any more. I find the daily and weekly rate to be higher when renting at the non-Airport locations. Plus, the car availability at the non-Airport location is very small compared to the Airpot and I'm not sure, but I don't believe there are Emerald Aisles to pick from at the non-Airport locations. So you would have to go inside and fill-out the paperwork before getting your vehicle.

The cheapest I've been able to find so far has been to rent the day after arrival (Saturday) from the Car Care Center. I always look at the weekly/daily rates before any "supposed" discounts but the difference between the weekly rates & daily rates is astounding. Ftr, I did check for June 20 at the Care Care Ctr - the rates were just as expensive as MCO.

MCO, June 20-29...$355.40/week, $50.77/day - Total $518.44
[Em. Club discount]

Car Care Ctr, June 21-29...$233.18/week, $38.86/day - Total $314.29
[$35 coupon, Em. Club]

Haven't made a reservation yet, I'm just used to paying less than $200 *total* for a week's rental at MCO. I know the rates will probably drop as the day gets nearer, I'll keep checking - I've had rates drop the day of departure. I'll probably pull the trigger on one of the MCO rates today, just so we can at least be guaranteed a car.

You might want to check out Dollar at their DTD area location.

I have found that they blow away most rates from other carriers. We have used tem the past 5 or 6 trips and really like it. I just bus to DTD marketplace stop and walk right across the street.

We like their Compact as it the Caliber and has a ton of room.

I have an 11 day rental now for like $250 and can't find anything even close to that anywhere else.

Their Airportcode is MCOS01 and use either KISS or OCVBE for discount code.

Also you are going into the July4th week and finding Deal then make it harder as well. This is what I pulled for the 20-29th 4pm -4pm

Compact
Details Dodge Caliber
(or similar)
$200.47 / week
$264.45 total*

Mid-size
Details Chrysler Sebring
(or similar)
$215.00 / week
$295.00 total*

Full-size
Details Dodge Charger
(or similar)
$227.00 / week
$319.00 total*

What I like about useing them and Taking DME is you can cut a few days off as well here is the 21st-28th

If you want to then you can book a separate reservation using the free days. This way you can use another discount program for additional days when that discount program could not be combined with the free days. Here you will need to go through the motions of returning the car and picking up another one. But there is a chance they will let you keep the same car for a second, consecutive, reservation with the same company.

You may need to book at least one paid day with the free days so you will have something to charge on your credit card that offers car rental insurance and coverages. Inquire of your credit card company in advance about how they treat this situation, since each bank has different rules.

You have a 9-day rental so you are paying A LOT per day for those extra 2 days. I would use your 2 free days and then rent for a week. A "weekly" rental is 5-7 days so using more free days won't matter.

Let me run some numbers and get back to you.

If you don't mind going back to the airport to rent your two free days at National, Hotwire has mid-size cars for $16 per day for 6/20-6/27 for a total of $168 (including taxes and fees) for the week.

Hotwire uses only Avis, National, Alamo, Budget, Enterprise or Hertz.

You can probably shave a few dollars off per day if you use Priceline instead.

I pricelined a Hertz car last week at MCO for $12/day midsize. The price was great - but - first time using Hertz at that location and I have to say the shuttle was a hassle. Between the wait (~15 minutes), shlepping onto (and off) the shuttle, the ride itself, and then the long line at the counter (due to priceline, I am a gold member but you can't get gold service with priceline), it easily added an hour to the rental car pickup vs. our usual National emerald club.

I probably won't priceline again for a car unless I am (like last week) going to save a lot of money.

I entered your dates into the uscarhire.co.uk website and you can rent through them with Budget for about $240...includes taxes, fees, second driver, and all insurance. This is for a 4-door intermediate. We used them in March and they were very good. Hope this helps.
(Their website gives the quote in GBP; you have to convert to USD).

Is there an "a" in the uscarhire? Meaning it should be usacarhire?

Does anyone know if Dollar at Regal Sun has a shuttle service? I know that you can take a bus to DTD and then walk from there but we are getting it in the morning and I am not a morning person....so if I took the DTD bus and walked I would have to get up even earlier...... I know I am brutal, I am a night hawk.
