Changing tickets due to 2nd trip planned

I hope someone can help me. Here's the deal. My kids and I are going to WDW in June, staying for 7 nights. Booked room only (35% discount on CL at BC) and added 7 day park hopper MYW tickets and DDP. We are coming back in Sept. for 3 nights/4 days for free dining and have 4 day MYW tickets (hadn't added the hopper option yet but starting to think I should.) The kids' grandmother will be joining us in Sept., but not in June. I've tried to research how we might save some money on park tickets but my head spins every time I start looking. FYI, June trip is paid in full, however, I'm assuming I could make changes to the tickets only since they were not part of a package such as the 4/3 deal. Can anyone tell me if there is a better, more cost effective ticket option for us?

Thanks in advance

Look into the price of an Annual Pass. You still need a one day park pass for the free dining in September-but you can save those tickets and use them or upgrade them later.

I agree.

What you are paying now is $521.85 for 2 tickets (a 7 day MYW PH, and a 3 day base MYW)

For a 10 day PH Non Expiring its 518.66 + $80.00 for the 1 day ticket needed on the 2nd trip but you will have hopping at no additional charge for the 2nd trip.

Last option is an AP which is $499.49 sure you still have to buy that 1 day ticket but it can be saved for any future trips. With the AP you will have the ticket until next June maybe squeeze in one more trip by then and with AP resort rates or stay off property and parking is free.

Thanks for the advice. I priced several options out, and figured out we could save a whopping $6 by going with annual passes for the kids and I; we would have to use the one day MYW for their grandmother in Sept. and upgrade it to a 4 day hopper. We would still have the leftover 1 day passes for myself & the kids, but honestly, with 2 trips this year I truly doubt we'll go back again before next summer. Unless of course we fall in love with Disney when we go in June.....

So your first trip is now a package? You said it is room only, but you have the dining plan?

The reason I ask is because AP holders have 10% discount coupons to give away (I have 11 of these puppies) for the purchase of annual passes. If you don't have a package on the first trip you can cancel the tickets and use the coupon and buy annual passes when you get there. You can't use the coupon if you are upgrading MYW tickets.

Then since you are a passholder, you don't have to buy base tickets for your free dining package. I don't know if this is still the case, with the free dining packages. Hopefully someone else will know for sure.

I think this will save you money.

Now if the first trip is a package, which it sounds like it is, the coupon won't work for you.

Not true........
Upgrades from MYW tickets to AP or PAP are allowed with this offer. If you upgrade from a MYW ticket purchased from a discounter, the normal upgrade rules apply in that Disney will absorb the difference between what the original ticket was purchased for and the current gate price of that ticket. (This is known as "price bridging".)

So you are saying that the OP could use the discount card, when upgrading her MYW tickets to APs?

Does anyone know if she can still get free dining without having to buy a base ticket with an AP?

Don't forget that with the AP you get a discount at World of Disney at DTD.

Then there are other benefits like discounted room rates at certain times of the year.

Is the $6 including the price of the one day tickets for yourself and kids? The one day tickets don't expire unless you use them.

I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to an AP this year. I know I will only get two 10 day trips out of it during free dining. I take my niece and next year it will be her younger sister's turn, so I can't get any extra days in with 10 day park passes being the max.

Yes, it would be $6 less to do the AP's (well less than that if someone gave me a 10% discount card) and yes, we would have the unused 1 day passes leftover. However, I think we can forego the hopper option for Sept. trip which would save over $200 and would make the MYW tickets a far cheaper option. And yes, my June trip was a room only with optional tickets and dining plan. I believe I could drop the MYW tickets and keep the dining plan. Can anyone confirm this? I know I have to pay for at least one day MYW tickets to get free dining in Sept.

Here are my calculations:

As per my current reservations:

For June - 2 adults/1 child, 7 day MYW tickets with Hopper - $850.94 ($278 + $278 + $243 + $51.94 tax)
For Sept - 3 adults/1 child, 4 day MYW tickets with Hopper - $1108.68 ($269 + $269 + $269 + $234 + $67.68 tax)
Total: $1959.62

If I were to get AP for me & the kids, 1 day MYW tickets for Sept., plus the cost to upgrade my MIL's ticket to 4 day hopper:

Annual Passes - 2 adults/1 child - $1439.94 (don't need premium passes so $469 + $469 + $414 + $87.94 tax)
For Sept - 3 adults/1 child, 1 day MYW tickets (no add-ons) - $306.74 ($75 + $75 + $75 + $63 + $18.74 tax)
Upgrade 1 MYW ticket to 4 day with Hopper - $206.61 ( $269 + $17.49 = $286.49 - 79.88 = $206.61)
Total $1953.29

It's the middle of the night and I can't sleep (well, I can now - but then I won't wake up in time for work), so forgive me if this doesn't make sense.

USED, in any way, Disney park passes are non-transferable. Not-yet-used one-day base passes ARE, therefore, transferable. You can't sell them, but you can certainly give them to another person.

If you go with the upgrade to APs, then in September, your MIL can use first her upgraded to a two day pass, then yours one day pass, then your DH's one day pass - or she could just skip a park day and use the three available one day base passes.

As someone posted previously, you can upgrade your MYW tickets to the APs and use the coupon, I was mistaken. So you don't have to drop the tickets from the package.

Does anyone know if you have APs, can you book a free dining package without purchasing one day base ticks?

If you can book free dining without buying a one day pass, then you can just buy your MIL a 4 day ticket. This would save you the most amount of money and you would still get to hop (if you wanted to in Sept).

So if you can do free dining without purchasing a one day ticket here are my calculations

Annual passes (469 +469+414= 1352-135.2 (10%)=1216.80 + 79.09 (tax)=1295.89
plus 4 day hopper for MIL 286.49
Total= $1582.38

Of course this is all dependant on whether you can book free dining with an AP and not have to buy one day base tickets.

If you have an AP and are buying the dining plan, you do not need 1 day base tickets. If you have an AP and want to go for free dining, you DO need to buy 1 day base tickets.

Depending on the resort and the size of the family, it is sometimes cheaper to use an AP discount and buy the dining plan.

Thanks for the clarification. So it looks like the OP may still be able to save some money using the coupons, just not as much as I thought. bummer.
