Are you allowed to carry on blue gel ice packs?

I knew you guys would know ! We are leaving tomorrow, and I really need to pack a lunch for DS b/c of his food alleriges. I was hoping to pack a blue gel ice pack to keep it all cool. Anyone know if we can carry these on a plane, or are they against the rules? --Katie

Unless they are required to keep actual medicines cold, ice packs are not permitted. You can, however, put in a package of frozen grapes or something like that to use in lieu of an ice pack or ice.

no you cannot but we usually buy the smallest fruit juice box and freeze that. And the plus is, eventually the juice box will thaw and he can drink it .

Hmm. We carried on a blue ice packet in a lunch pail with sandwiches, grapes, etc. to eat on the plane with no trouble.

I don't think the smallest juice box, which is usually 4 ounces, are allowed. I believe 3 ounces is the most allowed.

Well, TSA screening is…imperfect.

The TSA's Web site pretty much says (albeit obliquely) that juice in containers larger than 3 oz. is OK in carry-on bags when travelling with children. Here's the link to the page on their Web site.

Curious

It says on the TSA website juice is allowed when with infant or toddler, how strict are they about juice for a child age 6? I was hoping to bring food and juice for her but was concerned they would tell me no since she was no longer a toddler.

There's not necessarily a whole lot of consistency in how strict they are with regard to these things. I've heard reports of screeners refusing to let juice through for passengers with toddlers, for example, and in this thread we've heard about people getting through security with supposedly forbidden items. As a result, it's very difficult to predict just how things will go.

I think I will freeze a few juice boxes-- if nothing else, they will keep DS's lunch cold enough until we get to security. If we have to throw them away, then we can just buy some juice past the check point. The frozen grapes are a really good idea, too though-- I would have never thought of that, and those are sure to be allowed through.--Katie

We carry a note from our Dr. explaining the issues with DS. So far we have not had an issue with drinks and foods. We do however seem to get the TSA with bad manners. They always say something to DS about being too big for a stroller. I come back with he has autism. What is your excuse for bad manners?

That shuts them up quickly!

I love the frozen juice box idea and the grapes. Good luck.

Good for you!!! And shame on the TSA people. Sometimes people just need to mind their own business! --Katie

Better idea than bringing "a few of" anything that you might/will have to throw away: In addition to the frozen grapes, put ice cubes in some small zip-top plastic bags. Seal. Put each bag inside another bag. Seal. Place food in insulated lunch tote. Place grapes (also in zipper bags) and ice among/around/over food. Zip.

Before getting in the security line, take ice bags to restroom. Empty in sink. Reserve bags.

Once through security, find a not-too-busy food kiosk, fast food restaurant, etc - someplace that would have ice. One with soda dispensers you use yourself would be great. Check with an employee - it should be fine if you use their ice dispenser to put some ice back in those bags.
