Welcome Home, Now Relax ~ Day 12 - Hollywood Studios

Sunday 5th April 2009

It was back to the early mornings today so we were up at 7:30 and out an hour later. We parked up in Stage 42 and went straight into the park, although we were held at the end of the road until 9:00 when the park opened.

We headed straight for Toy Story Mania where the line again moved fairly quickly and we were on within 15 minutes or so, having skipped a bit of the line as the ride loader was looking for a party of two. Dad managed 56,600 with 57% accuracy and I came out ahead with 85,400 and 49% accuracy.

Once we finished the ride we got fast passes with a return time of 12:25-1:25. We then went over to Tower of Terror, which showed a wait time of 45 minutes but we were actually on within about 15 minutes. We had a sequence of 3 or 4 drops, got some good ‘air time’ and both really enjoyed it.

From the Tower we walked round to Muppetvision 3D which I still really enjoy, especially the pre-show with the 3 synchronised monitors and my favourite line - “I’m Max. Debbie was sick so the union sent me”.

After Muppets we walked round and sat by the backlot tour for a few minutes before going round to Sci-Fi Dine-In for our 11:30 reservation. For those who don’t know, Sci-Fi is a table service restaurant, although the majority of the ‘tables’ are in 50’s style cars set up as though they are at a drive-in theatre with a movie screen at one end of the restaurant. The screen shows cheesy ‘horror’ movies from the 50’s with titles like ‘Attack of the 50 foot woman’, ‘The colossal man’ and ‘Devil Girls from Mars’. They appear to be on about a 45 minute loop based on the time we were seated and the time they started repeating.

We both had a Reuben sandwich (corned beef and sauerkraut), I had a vanilla coke, Dad had a cherry coke and the total was $32.14. This is one of those restaurants that gets mixed reviews and although I would agree it is not a gourmet dining experience it is something different and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

Once we came out of the restaurant our fast passes for Toy Story Mania were active so we made our way back there and were on within 5 minutes. Neither of us did so well this time, Dad scored 53,600 with 46% accuracy and I scored 75,500 with 43% accuracy. This is definitely one of the best rides in Disney World and I decided that I would get another couple of goes in before we go home.

The times for Lights, Motors Action hadn’t worked in our favour and I decided that rather than hanging about for over an hour for the 2:45 show we would leave the park and come back for the 5:30 show. We had a browse in the shops and bought Mickey head salt and pepper grinders, Mickey head coasters and a couple of bottle stoppers.

We then left the park at around 1:20 to return to the studio for a few hours break. We were back out at 4:15 and returned to the Studios where we parked up in Music 60 and caught the tram to the gates. We ambled round to Lights, Motors, Action and had about a 15 minute wait until they let us in to take our seats. I really enjoyed the show, Dad not so much and it is one of those that we will only do every couple of years.

After the show we went round to Studio Catering Company where Dad had a pulled pork sandwich, I had a chicken Caesar wrap and we had a coke each. After we had eaten we had a quick look at the wait time for Toy Story Mania but it was showing 90 minutes so at 6:50 we left the park and made our way back to the studio where we spent the rest of the evening ‘chilling’ and were in bed by 10:00 intending to return to, a hopefully drier, Animal Kingdom in the morning.

Accuracy was still hopeless though!

Sci-Fi was really good fun. It's one of those places that isn't about the food it's about the atmosphere and it has that in bucketfuls.

Us too. I don't think we've ever ridden one ride so many times in one trip before.

You do miss out on a lot by going Fastpass. I didn't realise until we did it that going that way you miss out on Mr Potato Head, which is supposed to be one of the main features of the attraction, besides the games of course. Although I suppose he is designed to entertain the queues so you forget about the wait time so it doesn't really apply for Fast pass anyway.

I am looking forward to trying TSM! Sci-fi has not appealed to me before as it has fixed reviews but your inside shots make it seem like an experience as well as a meal, I think my kids would like it.

That's definitely the way you have to look at it Andrea. The food isn't the best you will eat but it certainly isn't bad and it is a completely different setting to anything else you will find in Walt Disney World.

I would like to try SciFi for the experience but will have to wait until DS is not in a high chair any longer so that we can ask for a car.

Great day, I enjoy the stunt show too, and some lovely Disney shopping.

Like you, TSM has become our favourite ride too! Shame that it is also a favourite of most people who ride it and therefore has queues to match! My dream would be that there would be no queue and we could stay on and ride over and over! (Yes - sadly, I know this could only happen in dreams!!)

I love the Muppets 3D jokes too, I think my favourite one is "Enough of this foolishness!" "What foolishness would you like to see?" I'd like to give Scifi another chance at some point, ate there in 2005 but got seated at one of the flying saucers (didn't know about ADRs etc back then!) and ordered some bad dishes, I think they key in there is to stick to the basics and be seated in a car
