If I recall, you can go online and pay for bags ahead of time or do this at the terminal. I paid ahead of time. I printed the reciept and took it with me just in case it was needed.

If you end up with more bags than you paid for they just charge your account.

Does AirTran charge for EXTRA luggage or ANY luggage??

I just booked them today for our Halloween trip to the World and I was shocked to see that they charge $6 per person per flight to choose your seat! What if you are traveling with kids and can't be separated from them? It's not even a luxury but sometimes a necessity. I was very turned off by that ... now if I have to pay for all luggage, extra or standard, I will be a little upset.

oh seriously??

I couldn't wait for a response ... so I had to go investigate for myself and yes for anyone else who didn't know it ... straight from their website ...

First Checked Bag
For all coach class reservations booked on or after November 12, 2008, the charge for a first checked bag is $15. For reservations booked before this date, one bag may be checked free of charge, with size and weight limitations (see baggage allowance details below).

I am OVER these airlines and all of their FEES!

Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news, BUT.... you are going to have to pay for checked baggage.
Directly from AirTran's web site:
Baggage Allowance Summary
Fees (per bag)
1st checked bag: weight: 50 lbs. or less; dimensions: 61 inches or smaller

Fee based on reservation booking date:
Booked on November 12, 2008, or later $15

2nd checked bag: weight: 50 lbs. or less; dimensions: 61 inches or smaller

Fee based on reservation booking date:
Booked on August 14, 2008, or later $25

I did delete some info but that was based on booking last year, and since you said you booked today, I figured that this was the relevant stuff you needed to see.
Try not to let it ruin your trip. I used to love Air Tran , but I really can't stand that they are nickel and diming me to death.
So now I fly SW. No seat fees or luggage fees and I always have plenty of luggage. I take an empty suitcase just for the souvies!

Have a great trip!

Thank you ... and I won't let it ruin the trip, but it's sure not starting out great!

Either way, it is still hundreds of dollars less than jetblue ...

I am not sure SW flies out of the airport we like to fly out of (smaller, closer option than NYC) so I might have to suffer with it!

thank you so much for the detailed info!!

I also have small children and booked with Airtran for Oct/Nov and have paid the $6 pp seat fee. It does seem ridiculous to be charged a fee so you are guaranteed to sit with your children. But even with that fee, the four of us are flying non-stop from Philadelphia to Orlando for $600 total. No other airline could even come close to that!

Pam,

Yep, same here ... guess we just have to deal with it since they are still so much cheaper than the closest alternative. Have you ever flown with them before?

I did just read today on Yahoo that AirTran is rated the 2nd best (behind Hawaiin Airlines) with customers so lets see how they make it up to us!! Cuz I don't see it so far!

Kat

ps ... have a great trip!!!

Thanks, you too! I have not flown with them before, but I have asked around and heard a lot of positive feedback. Only time will tell!!

We flew with them in Dec. and the service was very good on board. Can't say a whole lot though on check in. We flew from Dulles where they took our bags after we tagged and weighed them. But on MCO end we were required after checking in to once again load our bags and move them from check in counter to another area where they sent them off to be loaded. We paid in advance for our seat choice....which still ended up being cheaper with ticket price them most of the other airlines. I have to say in all honesty that southwest's service is a whole lot better and we will more then likely go back to flying with them next time.

We are flying airtran as well for October. The rates were really good and I could not wait for Southwest to release their dates.

We flew from Munich, Germany to Naples Italy and they did not preassign our seats. it was tough with two children (5 and 9). They had us all over the plane. The look on my 9 yr olds face when I told her that if we can get two seats together, she will still have to be by herself. Luckily, a couple of very nice passengers over heard us and gave up their seats so we would all be near each other. Offered to buy them a drink on the flight - did not realize alcohol was free.

Anyway- do I think the charge is another way to suck money out of us...yes. Am I willing to pay it...yes.

For future reference for those of you using Air Tran with little ones. You can go through a site called kayak (it's a search site) and that allows you to pick your seats for free. Someone had posted this on a previous thread and so we tried it when we booked our flight and it worked like a charm. We got the expedia price through them and the exact flight we wanted and got to pick our seat for free.
