Disney Rewards Visa 5X Promotion- double-take

I got an ad in the mail for the Chase Disney Rewards Visa promotion, but I had to look at it twice. At first look, it appears to be a great promotion. Here's what it says on the front of the mailer.

"EARN
5X
DISNEY DREAM REWARD DOLLARS
on eligible dining, groceries, gas and airline
purchases in April, May and June

See inside for details."

Great deal, right? Normally, you get 1% of what you spend back as a reward on this card. This makes it look like you're going to get 5% back. But look on the inside of the mailer.

The big print:
"Buy all the things you need. And get rewarded with the Disney things you want faster.
Earn 5x Disney Dream Reward Dollars (DDRDs) on eligible purchases in the categories below in April, May, and June.
  • DINING
  • GAS
  • GROCERIES
  • AIRLINES"
OK. Still sounds good, right? Still sounds like 5% bonus rather than 1%.
Then the Small print:

"Watch how fast your DDRDs can add up! For every eligible dollar you spend above $250 each month ... you'll accumulate Disney Dream Reward Dollars at 5x the regular rate. But first be sure to enroll..."

Wow. So the 5X doesn't kick in until AFTER you spend $250.00. And then the next month, you have to spend another $250.00 again before the bonus kicks in. And again in June.
Plus... There is a cap of $100.00 in DDRDs available on this promotion.

Then there's this notation, "The maximum accumulation during this promotion is 100 bonus Disney Dream Rewards Dollars, which equates to $2500 total over the specified hurdle".
I don't think the math works out there. I would think that 100 rewards dollars equates to 5% of $2000, not $2500.

Anyway, the most you can get is $108 (the max $100 plus 8 for the $750 "hurdle") (I think), but you have to spend $3250 to get it. That turns out to be a 3.3X bonus rather than a 5X bonus-- at the very most. If you happen to spend more than 3250 on those specified items, you go back to earning 1% again!

I don't think this one is worth getting worked up over.

Yep, I got that offer too, and feel the same way as you about it.. It's great if you are already spending that much every single month anyway, but we don't.

I say, pffft.

Feel lucky that your rewards kick in after only $250 in eligible spending, mine kicks in after $1000 in spending a month in those categories. I just threw the ad away because I would never in a month meet the $1000 spending minimum.

Ours is over $1000 as well, wish it were 250! We charge everything and pay off monthly so we will get a few bonus rewards, so much doesn't count though, Kroger is my usual grocery and it is classified differently so gas and groceries don't count there.

Wow! It's even worse than I thought. Different offers for different people. After begging with them to lower my interest rate for months, I'm not going to complain much, but sheesh!

Personally, I was glad to get the offer, since I am planning on an August trip. Any extra reward dollars I earn that I can spend when I am there is great with me! Couldn't have come at a better time!

I was glad to see your post! I have not rec'd an offer from them ever but always call when I see one posted here. I called today and told them I was inquiring about how to enroll for the offer you mentioned(5x after the $250). They enrolled me in about 2 minutes. We are going to WDW end of June and have been trying to use it for things we would normally pay cash for(like gas and groceries) and then pay the card.I will be charging over $250 a month so am glad to get the 5X's reward to go towards our trip

My offer was for $500 per month. Meanwhile, I had one for Jan-Mar for $750 per month. I may get something from it since I put everything on it, and pay it off at the end of the month.

Just our airline tickets alone will put us over the $250 mark, looking at approx $600 RT for our tickets, will be using our Disney card for all of our gas, and turn right around and pay that baby off!! Like PP's said, will come in handy for our upcoming trip. I know it's not much, esp. with the caps, but hey it all is stuff we'd have to buy anyway. That's how I look at it.

I just got the offer today and registered right away. We are going down in October. I will just set aside the cash that I would use at the grocery store or gas station then use it to pay the bill. I'm also going to put airline tickets for my husband and myself and my son and his girlfriend on the card. That will put me over the $250 for April. I hit the $250 in the first week at the grocery store.

I didn't get this offer, but for the last one I did receive, our threshold was $750. The first one we got, it was $250. Who knows how they come up with those amounts??

I called and asked about it and the cs I talked to said I had to meet the requirements each month to get anything. Is that right? So if I spend 500 one month but then nothing for the next two, I get nothing and she said yes sorry you have to meet the requirements each billing period to get the bonus rewards.

Our "hurdle" was $1000 a month, too. I still signed up...nothing to lose, I guess.

My question is...does the $1000 hurdle have to be in the 4 categories too or just after you spend $1000 on anything, then you start earning the 5x?

Thanks!
