Umbilical hernia repair?

Have you had one? How bad is the surgery? Painful? Long recovery?

Im about 97% sure I have one. Im seeing my NP tomorrow but was just wanting to hear from others who have had it done.

I had mine repaired in college. They don't "remove" a hernia, they repair it-sew up the opening. It wasn't bad. It was a same day surgery, the day after I was sore and getting out of bed was interesting (you have to roll over on your side and push yourself up) but by the 3rd day no pain and I was moving fine. I had a weight restriction of 10-20 pounds that I could lift for a while, a month or so.

Everyone recovers differently - DH has had 4 hernias - 1 umbilical & 3 inguinal (groin). Last July he had the umbilical removed (yes they can remove some, but just repair most), and an inguinal repaired at the same time (and we threw in a vasectomy for good measure too!) The recovery was awful. He was in tears from the pain for the 1st 48 hours, and couldn't get out of bed. He could barely get around the first week, and struggled to get back to normal for a few weeks. It still bothers him after 8 months. Just last month he went back for another inguinal repair on the opposite side, and this one went much smoother. He was up & out of bed the next day but really couldn't get around for 48 hours by himself. He is just now back to doing normal things after 4 weeks.

Keep in mind with the umbilical hernia they are cutting your abdominal muscles, this takes awhile to heal. You use your abs for just about everything so you may be sore for awhile!

I've heard stories of people up & about & back to work in a week, so everyone recovers differently.

Good luck!

Well I dont mind sharing but mine is acrtually more of a horror story, but I am sure I am the exception to the rule. Make sure you have a good doctor for sure, that started my trouble. I call him Dr. Death. I got the hernia from having 3 kids in 4 years. Definetely not good.

Dr. D. just decided to sew the hernia back into the belly button. All was well and good until I developed a massive staph infection. He cut it back open in the er with no pain meds and sucked the poison out. I had an open draining wound and dh had to changed the bandage for like almost a month and I was on alot of pain killers.

Then about a month later I felt my whole abdominal wall practically tear apart while taking ds out of the car, I was not lifting him etc. Then I went to dr. #2, who happened to be the head dr. of the local hospital. He showed us a mesh graft he would put in and he put me on antibioltics for a month just to make sure everyting was killed. That recovery was about 6 wseeks, no heavy lifting, bending, careful driving etc.

Fast forward 11 years and a few weeks ago. I developed a bowel obstruction. Upon the ct scan and surgery by the top hernia dr. of the university hosp, can I say this guy was great. He found out my graft was still intact but the hernia moved around the corner somehow and the bowel got stuck in it. So he had to cut out 5 inches of my small intestine.

He said most likely a 70% chance this will have to be operated on again because he couldnt do what he wanted to do. I think he said it could be like 2 1/2 hours of surgery next time. I have to keep wearing this abdominal binder for like a month and it is definetely helping with the pain and keeping things in place for sure. I wish they had that the last time.

Everyone is different and I think the biggest things are ask alot of questions and get a very competent doctor.

Best of luck to you.

I hadn't answered this in my above post - all 4 of DH's were open. He has about a 2 inch scar from the inguinal surgeries & a scar around his belly button from the umbilical one.

DH had one. He fell on his stomach and it popped out. Last June he had to have emergency surgery b/c it became strangulated. On my brother's wedding day no less. Anyway, he's still having some issues with it. He's over 400 pounds so that makes it worse. They put the mesh in and it's taken him a long time to heal. He's doing physical therapy now for it and it still hurts periodically. The doctor told him it would take about a year to get back to almost normal speed. He'll never be the same again but it should be pretty good.

I had an umbilical repair and recovery was not a problem, on the other hand my inguinal was a horrible recovery and the scar tissue hurt for a few years. Both times I had mesh put in.

That's exactly what they told DH when he went back 6 months post op because it was still bothering him - that the scar tissue may bother him for years. Lovely!
