Any blondes do their own home highlights?

We are thinking about highlighting my hair at home. I have shoulder length dark (dirty dishwater) blonde hair. I used to be a lot lighter natural color but age has darkened it. It's been awhile since I've done a highlight so I have about four inches of root.

I typically have it done with a cap, however, I've been growing out my hair and am not sure I can still do a cap. Any tips or advice?

Years ago I used to use a cap on my hair, but it was shorter and had a lot of layers. When your hair gets longer it can be painful to pull it through a cap, which I found out. At that point I started getting it done with foils. But, a hairdresser friend of mine told me that some people can put baby powder in thier hair to make it less painful when pulling it through a cap. If your hair is on the thinner side, it's much easier, and hurts less. I would say try it. If it hurts too much you might have to go with foiling it.
