We just got back Saturday evening , we saw a baby something while walking over the bridge from BC to BW. I do not know what it was because it was dark. DH says it was not a Black Snake. We let a CM walking across from us know and I am sure he handled it.

I hate snakes and if that will happen to me, I would definitely freak out and comes out shaking.

DH and I have seen snakes several times. Once at Beach Club, near a quiet pool. We saw a large black snake at Saratoga Springs...it was just outside our sliding doors. Another one at Downtown, in some shrubs. On our last trip, we saw a large black snake on the grass very near first floor rooms at POFQ. We've seen alligators, armadillos, otters, deer and turkeys but nothing compares to seeing a snake! I usually insist that we don't have a room on the first floor!

I found this thread today and read all the pages. OMG. I am NOT a snake person at all so it totally freaks me out. I can relate to many of you on here.

HOWEVER, I have to thank all of you for the laughs you gave me today. Your stories and comments were CRACKING ME UP! I've been trying so hard not to laugh out loud here in my cube at work.

This thread has me totally freaked out!

My 8 year old son ran into a few harmless garden snakes at cub scout camp this summer and it completely ruined the trip for him. He refused to come out of the cabin for any of the fun. Seriously, he stayed in the cabin for two days. He is DEATHLY and unreasonably afraid of snakes. I have to reassure him often that snakes do not live in the Detroit area and it isn't possible for snakes to get into our house.

We leave for Disney in two weeks. I want to warn him of the dangers without freaking him out. How on earth do I do that? Especially when I am just as scared

I know nothing about snakes. Can someone educate me on which ones are bad and which ones are harmless? How can I tell the difference?

I have the willies so bad right now. I hate critters!

I've never seen a snake around WDW, but we rented a villa one year, and when we got there on the first day, there was a 'dead' chamelion in the living room. I say 'dead' cause we took it outside, and it was gone a few hours later. Not sure if it left on its own, or some predator got it.
I grew up around garden and black snakes at my grandma's house. We used to catch them and take them out of the garden, since my grandma was so afraid of snakes. Florida snakes still make me a bit iffy though, cause I'm not sure which ones are actually harmful.

I live in NYC, so I know next to nothing about snakes (the only ones here are the lawyers and bankers). However, generally any black snakes you see are pretty much harmless...they are non-venomous at least and are probably the type you are most likely to see, if you do see one at all (most people don't see any). The ones to worry about are the water moccasins - you may want to Google that one and faniliarize yourself with what they look like.

I hate the thought of even seeing a snake, let alone having one in my room! I requested a 1st floor room and we leave in 2 days! Think I'll see if they can make it a 2nd floor room instead. Yikes!

Best education, don't pick any up! Most snake bites in Florida involve holding a snake and alcohol. Water Moccasins (aka cotton mouths) are poisonous. A juvenile one looks much different than mature cotton mouth. The snake above, looks like a rat snake, a L-O-N-G rat snake. Black racers look very similar to a cotton mouth, but they are not poisonous. Ring neck snakes are common here, and they are usually about the size of an earth worm, black with a ring around their neck, and colorful underside. They are not poisonous either. A couple of my friends have had coral snakes in their yards. They are poisonous. The rhyme to remember is red touches yellow, kills a fellow. They are often confused with a king snake, who is not poisonous, and shares the same coloring. But I sure as heck am not going close enough to see which color is touching which! Pygmy rattlesnakes can be found in central Florida, most people report seeing them on golf courses. I have never seen one.

At Disney I have seen snakes at the MK, in the water near Tom Sawyer Island and at the water parks. Once at Blizzard Beach, my husband and I witnessed one (black racer) coming out of a person's beach bag. Since that day, I only bring zippered beach bags and keep them CLOSED tight! Also saw a skink go into someone's bag at Typhoon Lagoon.

You can google florida snakes. Chances are you will never see one while here. I've been here 10+ years and have encountered snakes 13 times and I'm outside every day.

I obviously knew this pic would be a snake and know I hate snakes, yet I click on it ! I like to think I'm trying to desensitize myself at looking at some harmless pics, but this one with it's head all looking out in the air did not work well !

We just got back on Halloween after a week at BWV. Here is my thread posted about the 2 snakes we encountered that week.

Watch out--they are there! I'm just glad ours weren't poisonous!
