Up date on 6 plus hour late Amtrak...........

Late January, we were in DC waiting for the train from Philly to head to Florida when the announcement came, after the normal 6 hour layover, that the Philly train had engine trouble. Hour by hour, it's still in Philly. Long story short, train makes it in, 6 more hours late, instead of departing DC at 6:30 pm, we finally leave at 1 AM, and then they have to add a car because of overbooking, Inauguration, and added car was as cold as a witches heart. We contacted customer services upon arriving home and explained the situation and yesterday received each a 100.00 voucher from Amtrak. Missed the 6 plus hours of Disney time but looks like we'll be headed down again to use voucher, makes the travel half price and we bought AP's, well renewed our old ones, so next trip will be a bargain.

Wow, interesting that they did that. Amtrak is kinda known for being really really late...I know the train up and down the west coast is routinely hours late...a friend actually was once 24 hours late getting back to Seattle from SF...was normal and nothing was given.

Amtrak contacted us first and asked if were on train 98 on such and such date, they knew and said a representative would be contacting us. Eince we're home at odd times, wife called customer service and verified the details on the date in question and they said we would be receiving a disbursement for our trouble, others must have called in. Granted it's been 4 weeks since our return but lo and behold, 2 vouchers for 100.00 each. Rather nice even though we still made it to Disney and enjoyed ourselves, like I said, guess we're going down again half paid for by Amtrak. We're very frequent travelers on regular Amtrak, last 15-20 trips by train, I do not fly anymore and we're getting too old for the driving stress, glad Amtrak feels for their customers.

Although it should take just as long to take the train from Syracuse to NYC as it does to drive or fly if you factor in the airport time and the time it takes to get from the airport to the city, in actuality, most often the train is 2 - 4 hours behind schedule.
I think this is one of the saddest things about our country compared to Europe. We invest more in our roads then we do in our mass transit systems. It's more efficient in terms of energy usage to take a train then it is to fly or drive, but it takes WAY too long.

But usually, that's not Amtrak's fault - freight trains get priority, weather issues, etc.

THIS - engine trouble - can't be blamed on any other entity except Amtrak, so it's not unreasonable that they would provide some compensation.
