The dye you found sounds fine--as long as it's the kind that comes with the bottle. Some dyes come in pouches that you mix in water--that is not the kind you want.

When you buy black in the Tulip or another brand (other than Dharma), use half the amount of water recommended to mix with the dye. This is a tip I learned from Roxy (the tie dye master!). It will make your black darker---black is hard to keep dark.

And yes, you'll need to get the soda ash to soak the shirts before you dye them.

Have fun! WARNING: It's addicting!!!
Thank you so much! And I did get the dye w/ the bottles.

Hi! Sorry I was out of town.

I don't wash my shirts before, some people do and that's fine too.

Hi Pixie. I have a couple of questions about the Christmas shirts you did.

1) What were the names of the Dharma colors that you used?
2) When using just two colors how do you do it? Half and half, or alternating quarters, or do you do more segments than that?

Thank for your help. You are so great for helping all of us!

I think they were Fire Red and bright green. I do alternate quarters.

Thank you so much for your help. I have a few more questions. I got a Jacquard kit at Joanns and the enclosed DVD said to band your bun first in the roll shape and then soak in the soda ash in the bands. Have you done it that way?

The kit says 10-15 shirts is this close to accurate? And have you used the Hanes shirts that come in a 5 pack or do you buy individual shirts?

Finally, how many bands do you put under the Mickey head? I have read through the first 50 pages of this thread and it looks like 4-10 bands would work.

Thank you.

It doesn't matter how you soak the shirt, as long as your soak it in the soda ash water, I always soak before i tied it.

I don't use undershirts like the ones you mentioned, those are to thin and to small, I use regular T shirts, yes individuals. About the kit, 10-15 is a lot of shirts but I don't know how big is the kit, if is the one with 3 bottles, then you might make 3 shirts depending on the size.

All depends how tie your put your bands, sometimes I used 2 or 3, sometimes 4 depending on how tie and how big is the shirt. 4 would be fine.

:D
