I know the rule is to let the dyes soak into the shirts for 24 hours, and that always works well for me.

However.. has anyone tried rinsing the shirts out sooner to get lighter colors? I use the good Dharma dyes, and normally like them bright, but I need to do one in lighter colors and didn't want to have to buy all new batches of dye if I could just rinse the shirts earlier. What do you think? How long would you let them sit?

Im not sure if I have a "for sure" answer for this, but I can tell you what I have noticed from my experience so far. The first time I made my dyes I wasnt sure how much to actually use. I ended up mixing WAY to much dye per water ratio (4tsp per bottle). The colors were fine, they were just extreamly bold and vibrant, not really a bad thing. But, I noticed things like my yellow (which should DEFINATLY only be mixed with 1 or 2 tsp) wouldnt mix all the way because there was just too much dye in the water. So, after the bottles would get to be about half or 2/3 empty, I would simply just add more water and the colors were still just as bright..... My point being lol that I would say that if you want the same color just a "duller" or lighter shade of the same color, to just use not as much dye. I dont think you should soak the shirts for less time because you still dont want them to fade or lose all their color over time. The soda ash really helps the bonding process of the dyes, at least from what I have read. I would just use half the amount of dye power per water solution. I hope that made sence lol.

You can use less dye for lighter color.

For PixieDust!

You are just the lady I wanted to ask a few questions lol. You shirts look awesome!!! I have yet to see any shirts that compare! Some have come close, but none look as crisp and as well defined as yours. Here are my questions (I apologise in advance for asking what I am sure are repetitive questions ) :

1. Is there something im missing when I do my shirts?! Mine come out with a great white line yet the dye still manages to bleed over the floss line, leaving no sign of the line there at all. Ive noticed this more with black than any other color. Do you know if black bleeds more than other colors??

2. When you bast stitch, are you stitching more than one line? Like are you going around the mickey head more than one time with the floss? Have you ever tried this and does it make a difference whether its one or more lines of stitching?

3. When you put your rubberbands on the mickey part, are you placing them "on" or below the stitched line? If below, how far below are you putting them???

I have done several shirts over the last couple weeks. They are getting better and better with each try, but the one thing I cant seem to figure out is how to ever get a shirt with the floss line well defined....or defined at all for that matter lol.

Thanks so much in advance!!

Hi, thank you kindly for your words.

Practice makes perfect of course the more your make or practice the better you get and learn from your previous mistakes, so don't feel bad.

Im not sure if some dyes bleed more, perhaps they could do to the chemical compounds or whatever its called. Sometimes mine do bleed more than other times.

I only do the basting once and the rubber bands should go over the floss line or below, there is a picture on the first page.

Pics

Yay! Made it to 10! Okay, here are my shirts I've made so far...

I'm happy with how they turned out, just the perfectionist in me is frustrated because I don't have the white floss line :-/. I will get there I suppose... :-)

Here is the same shirt, just went back and added a bow for my DD3 :-)

Thanks for all the great tips. We're having a family tie-dye event this weekend. Fingers crossed. I will post pics when they are done.

I've tried rubberbanding them and they just dont seem to sit right ...

Thanks!

Unfortunately I did not get any good pics of our shirts in action! We did get a bunch of Photopass pics though. When I get a chance, I'll take some pics and post them. I made 2 sets b\c I didn't LOVE the first batch. The 2nd set came out great though.
