Mixing the dyes

It seems straight forward to mix the dyes. For 1 cup of water I use x amount of TSP dye. Got it.

But how much urea do I mix in?

And I got jet black for the dye to use on Mickey's head. According to Dharma's instructions, it seems the water for that is supposed to be hot. Does anyone know if hot tap water will suffice?

Ok...I think I figured this all out.
1. found small funnels at Target (yay.)
2. I found the measurement charts on the Dharma site for the dyes and the Urea.

My bottles are 4oz. They were ones that came with previous Jacquard and Tulip kits that I had used.
The directions specify for 8oz, Pint, Qt and Gallon. So to keep things simple, I may just make enough for an 8oz bottle and then put the colors into two 4oz bottles of each color. I am doing 4 shirts 2 adult, 2 kiddos...so I expect that 8oz of each colr will be enough.
I'll mix the urea and water first, then add that to the dye powder to make the dyes used for coloring.
I'll then transfer them to the bottle(s)

I think this all makes sense. I hope others will correct me or gain some insight.

If you have a 4oz bottle from tulip kit, then is ONE Teaspoon

If the dye has * like turquoise, strong navy, etc. is 2 Teaspoon per 4oz

If the dye has ** like Black, then is 4 teaspoons per 4 oz water.

4 shirts 2 adults 2 kids if you are using 3 or 2 colors that is way more than enough.

Sorry, about the funnels, you can get them from target or wal mart from the kitchen utensils area, I got mine for like 2 dollars a set.

Thank you for the confirmation. I felt like a dog chasing its tail! Very cool 1 TSP per 4oz bottle is pretty straight forward!

Out of curiosity...with the volume that you do Pixie, do you baste stitch them all by hand?

I didn't know if doing them via a sewing machine was an option or not. Strictly curiosity.

I'd never used Jet black but I guess it would be ok too.

Still haven't dyed the shirts

Been fighting a cold and an overall hectic work\life schedule. I'm afraid I'll get starteda t 7PM and still be working on the shirts at midnight. So I think I'm going to just hold off until Friday night and not have to worry about bed time!

And I can still hang on to my threat of, "I won't make the tie dye shirts if you don't listen!" to my girls

Oh, I hear ya! I've been meaning to make these shirts for a a little over a month now. At this point, the next time we'll be able to do them is on Sunday; just 6 days before we leave. Oh well, good project to get us even more excited! Good luck with getting yours done and have a great trip!

I'm a task oriented guy and this past weekend, things just crept up and pushed back everything. So I got the baste stitching done but that was it. This is a project that you can't do in steps. Once the dye is mixed, it's go time!

So my plan is do them Friday, see how they turn out on Saturday. If I need new shirts, I still have some time. I'm optimistic though since this is the 4th time doing it. But I am my own worst critic. So hopefully all goes well!

*sigh*

Just dyed our shirts. I know on at least one the black dye crept past the rubber bands. Not real happy about that. We'll see in 24 hours just how good\bad they turn out.

I think I'm going to get 4 more shirts and try doing the circles instead of the swirls. While I'm out, I guess I'll get a new Clorox gel pen, too! Grrr...

Is there anyone (hint hint PixieDust32 hint hint) that is willing to type up new step-by-step instructions including recommendations for products, additives, rubber band placement, etc. I am so lost and am hoping that having all the instructions in one place would help! Thanks!

PS PixieDust32- your shirts are BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I typed up a bunch of stuff. I am going to PM it to PixieDust32 to see if she'll add her two cents.
