I have got some red shirts I am going to try just doing black Mickey ears on them. What do you think they will turn out like?

Ok...we've done a few shirts...they aren't perfect but they aren't bad...lol...I have no idea how to show pics on here or I would show them The Mickey head showed up well on the kid tshirts but not quite as well on the adult shirts...I wrapped the thread around and around after I gathered the Mickey head and put 2 really thick rubber bands on as tight as I could get them. I will try adding more rubber bands next time...how thick of an area should they cover after all of the rubber bands are on? Maybe an inch of fabric? Or more? Like this [ ] or like this [ ] ?

You need to upload your photos to a place like photobucket. Then copy and paste the image code. On photobucket, you just put your mouse on the picture, the 4 code choices pop up, and you left click the image one to copy it. Then you paste it in here - ctrl + V to paste. you can click preview to make sure it posted.

I also did not get the white definition, but I used a bleach pen and traced my pattern to correct - left the bleach on about 5 minutes and rinsed off - I did not want it WHITE white. I know I used too much dye on the mickey head - I will hold it upside down next time and add dye slowly until it reaches the rubber bands. Here is a picture of one of my shirts.

Thanks so much for this thread! Made shirts this weekend and we love how they came out! I did have an issue with the colors bleeding past the rubberbands, but I'm still pleased with our results!

Thanks so much for telling me how to post pics! I will post them this weekend I haven't gotten my hands on a fabric pen...and the bleach pen didn't work (maybe it was old?)...so we got some white fabric paint and painted our Mickey head outlines on...lol...they actually are kind of cute, I think! I will take some pics and post them...I think we are going wrong by just not putting on enough rubber bands and are not JUST adding the dye until it spreads up to the rubber bands. Some of the shirts we are working with (namely, MINE...lol) are quite Pooh sized so I am trying to get as much color saturation as I can because usually I have tons of white..I think I have gotten the hang of spreading the folds to add the dye!

Any hints or tips on doing the black a little less messily? It seems to spread like crazy! Pixie has very nice, neat black lines on her shirt...Mine look like smudges!

So after lurking around this thread for months and getting ideas, I decided to actually tie dye shirts for our upcoming Girls Trip to Disneyland. I've tie dyed plenty of times before and I have all the chemicals and dyes and I have the technique down pat (I prefer to use string instead of rubber bands), but I was terrified to try this. I've never tie dyed anything where you stitch and bast before, but I thought what the heck? Tie Dye isn't supposed to be perfect right?

Well, I think I did pretty well!

Ok...we tried some tie dye Mickey heads...I am going to show several pics....the first ones we did turned out OK but I didn't get much definition to my Mickey heads...we did the whole basting, banding..soaking in ash water...making the spiral...and dying. I couldn't get the bleach pen to work so we got some fabric paint and painted our Mickey heads...lol. This is one of those...now keep in mind, we are dyeing way XL shirts..mine is a 5x...so this one is a big shirt. I am finding it difficult to get a clean spiral look with the bigger shirts...anyone know a secret to that? I am pleased with the amount of color I am getting...I think I actually want a bit more white for some contrast! That used to be a problem, getting too much white but I learned how to open the folds and really get the dye down into the fabric. Oh, we used Dharma dyes as well...wow, the color you get with those is fantastic!

Wow, sorry the pic is so big...I didn't want to use a lot of black because I saw where people were talking about how the black runs wild...but I wanted more black than I ended up with on this one. It's not perfect...but not bad for a first try!
