I've been doing them outside, but a basement you don't mind getting a little messy would be a good option if you're worried about weather. You might want to invest in a plastic drop cloth if you're thinking kitchen.

Shirts and pillowcases are soaking. Would love to do a smaller batch first to make sure I am doing it right, but today is the only day I can do it. Im attempting them on the washer and dryer with an old vinyl tablecloth down. UGH! I wish I wasnt a perfectionist because all I keep thinking is that Ill do it wrong. Happy thoughts...happy thoughts...next month we're in the World...next month we're in the World

HHMMMM...those you tube videos make it look easy. How do you hold the shirt and not get color all over the white that you havent done yet? I wish opening of the bottle wasnt so big. It was coming out so fast. The dye seemed to "travel" through the fabric as soon as it touched it. Is that normal? I wondered if my fabric was too wet from the soda ash, but I took one apart just to make sure and I couldnt wring any more out. Oh, the waiting game....

DD8 , DS5 and I just finished our 4 shirts. They are waiting in the laundry room in plastic bags until we can open them tomorrow. I'm worried. The kids were not exactly "helpful"..

I am worried we didn't wring them out enough after the soda ash. I did try, but they were still pretty drippy when we were dyeing. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Roxy!
I'm getting ready to tie dye red and yellow but would love to add some black as an accent like on this shirt. How did you do this? Will you share your secret?

Well, we did our shirts today! I can't wait to see how they turned out. I did a regular Tshirt, a twisted/knot-front shirt (from Dharma), and two girls' sundresses (also from Dharma). My shirt and the sundresses are all multi-mickey headed.

Mu colors are orange, yellow and black like Pixie's above (ah but I could only dream that they'd turn out that nice)..I just hope they aren't complete brown blobs in the end. It might have been overly ambitious to try so many mickeys on a shirt on my first attempt, we'll see!

I did see some bleeding through the rubberbands on at least one of my mickeyheads, but I have my bleach pen ready.

The hardest part for me was the twisting and making my "bun". The plastic under the shirt twisted too and as a result I doubt I will have very pretty well defined spirals. That difficulty was enhanced by my garment choices- the dresses had smocking which just did not twist well and my knot-front top I think just might have too much going on in the front (my mickeys are in the lower corner and upper shoulder, offset.) The plain T-shirt was MUCH easier to work with by far!

Fingers crossed, I'll post pics as soon as I can! Thanks Roxy for all of your help!!!

Success!! I have two Mickey heads that need bleach pen outlines, but the rest turned out great! Two things I learned: when you think you have too much dye on your shirt, its just right (except for Mickey heads.) And when you think you have enough rubber bands and they're tight, add more and tighter! I was cursing the process yesterday evening, but am loving it today.

We did our shirts yesterday too. They are still curing and we are working today, so we will probably rinse them all tonight when we get home. We did take out our bandannas (no Mickey heads), because we just couldn't wait and were very happy with the colors and swirls. DH's, as always, came out the best!
