Exclamation Mountain lion reported in our neighborhood - Update Page 2

Tonight's news had a report that a 200 lb mountain lion has been sighted in our neighborhood. We're not out in a rural area either -- we're in a highly populated suburban area right outside the city. The largest thing we've heard reported before this is a fox.

We have four small dogs that need to go outside to do their business. The only protection in the back yard is a standard chain link fence about 3 feet tall. I usually go out with them, but I'm no match for a mountain lion.

Any suggestions from anyone on how to keep them safe until this thing is caught? DW Lauri is really stressed out about this right now.

OMG, I saw a picture of the mountain lion on channel 12!!! I saw a small black bear in our yard this summer, and made the mistake of telling my siblings. Now every time they see me, they joke on me. At least you have evidence!!

All I can say is go out there with the dogs. Most wild animals will avoid humans. I hope they catch it soon. I can't believe it's roaming in such a suburban area.

Invest in a tall, covered dog run right at the door?

Take them out - one at a time - on a leash.. You may have to let them do their "business" a little closer to the house than you normally would, but it's better than them (or you) getting mauled and/or killed by a mountain lion!!

Good luck - and be safe!!

I grew up hiking in the Rocky Mountains. We were always told to make noise - lots of noise if you thought there might be a mountain lion nearby. Unless the cat is starving to death - they tend to run away from the confrontation. However, my dad and uncles always carried a large walking stick to use "just in case".

Stay inside as much as possible until they catch/kill the cat.....and whatever you do.........do not look like food........

When I was young, we lived in Mountain Lion territory and my Mom told me once that I was playing in our back yard with my two brothers (we were all between 2yrs and 5 years old)......and she looked out the kitchen window at us......and saw a mountain lion crouched 50ft away from us in the "prowlin' for a kill" pose.........

She about died........and came and got us.......

Yeah, kinda anti-climactic (which I believe this mountain lion in your parts will be also). People are generally too much trouble for these cats (some of us have "boom-sticks).....now small dogs?

They may have a problem.

There's speculation that it's somebody's illegal pet that got loose.

I'm always outside with the dogs when they go out. No shotgun, just a sword right inside the door and a long piece of conduit kept outside as a just in case.

What makes it bad is that we're at the edge of the subdivision with a creek bed and wooded area. It's not like we're in the middle completely surrounded by houses and lights.

KirstenB, not sure what part of Richmond you're in but the sighting was only about a mile from Stony Point Fashion Park, the dog-friendly mall. I hope they know about this and are taking precautions.

It might be gross to some, but I would lay down newpapers for the dogs until it was captured. It would just be too much of a risk to me.

YIKES! I am sure Lauri is beside herself.

I have no idea but I agree with the things posted here. Anyone know if Mace/Pepperspray might be helpful??? I am thinking I would be carrying that with me to go out if it could at least give you time to grab the dog and escape. I agree with only going out with one at a time.

Well, luckily the oldest dog already wears something because she's become incontinent so if she has an accident, we are covered. The other two girls have the same type deal that they wear when they are in heat. I guess they could wear those for number 1. Then we will only need the papers for Reilly and for number 2.

I'm hoping this is cleared up before tomorrow night. I'd hate to see a bunch of kids Trick or Treating with a Mountain Lion nearby. We just called a former employee of DW Lauri's that lives a street over from where it was sighted and she didn't know anything about it because she didn't watch the news today.
