Halloween Fan with two little ones trip report

Ok, we went to Disneyland and San Diego from October 3rd - 7th and it has taken me this long to start this report. I promise lots of pictures, but you must be patient.

Our trip started at 5:00 am when my husband dropped me, DS3 and DD 8 months at the airport. He would fly in the next day. My DD8 stayed at home since it was a short trip and I did not want her to miss three days of school. Grandma spoiled her while we were gone.

Now you need to picture me walking through the airport with a double stroller with two kids in it, a booster seat hung over the push bar of the stroller, a car seat strapped over one arm, a small duffle bag, a small backpack and a large backpack on the other arm. Then I had to unload all of this and take shoes off of everyone to get through security. We made it in less than 5 minutes!

The flights were smooth. The little one slept the first leg and the older one on the second leg. Then at 9:47 am we arrive at SAN (Orange County).

The next step was to get the rental car. We rented a mid-sized car from Thrifty. We find their counter in the airport and we are told to go down the elevator, through the garage and then into their rental office. I arrive in the rental office and I am rudely told that this office in only for VIPs and that the main office is upstairs in the airport where I started my journey. I am also told that I can wait there, but if anyone comes in that is a VIP my transaction will be stopped and they will help them first. They did this several times and made a big deal to point out how important the new person was. Finally, I received my car and was told to inspect it in the dark garage for any dings or dents. It was a Subaru Legacy, which is not midsized, but the kids barely fit as did the stroller.

Next, we head off for the Lemon Tree Hotel. Originally the plan was to stay with my sister in LA for one night before my husband's conference started in San Diego, but she booked us a hotel instead since she said her apartment was too small for all of us. This hotel is amazing! The day after she made the reservation they called to ask when my flight would be coming in and told me to call them when I landed and they would have my room ready even though check-in was at 2 pm.

I followed the directions on my MapQuest and got to the right street numbers, but could not find the hotel. It is a small boutique hotel that also has suites. They directed me to the hotel and let me know that the street numbers are not in order. I found the hotel and our room was ready. It was only 11 am. The room had a welcome packet in it that contained a men's and a women's disposable razor, shave gel, tooth paste, shampoo and conditioner, a power bar and several other items. It was all name brand items. The room was nicely decorated and it had a table with chairs and a fridge. We had a patio door that opened up to a view of the gated pool. We placed our stuff in the room and went back to the front desk to ask for directions for our next journey.

First Photos

Here we are on the airplane.

Then we went to the character warehouse for a few hours before heading to Downtown Disney for a few hours before heading back to the hotel to pack up for dinner at Goofy's Kitchen and the MToTP.

We packed up and headed out an hour early. Then when we arrived at the Mickey and Friends parking lot the parking attendant told me that I would have to pay the $12 to park there since they were not letting party guests in until 6:30 pm. We had a long, but polite argument on my part, not his. I asked if he could call a supervisor and the supervisor told me to let me in. He grumbles something under his breath and then threw my ticket at me and told me to go ahead. This was not a Disney attitude. I only wish I had gotten his name! However, we were 30 minutes late by this point since the line to get in was so long. Then we had to catch an elevator and a tram just to get to Downtown Disney. I then sprinted through the area to the Disneyland hotel. I met so many nice people while trying to get to the hotel. They helped me with my stroller and kids on the tram as I had to fold the stroller. I couldn't thank them enough for all of their help.

Here is a photo of Downtown Disney decorated for Halloween.

We made it to dinner and were told that they never cancel a reservation. While on the tram I called Disney Dining in Orlando to ask for the CA# since I did not add it to my phone before leaving and believe it or not they were able to transfer me from Florida to California! That is Disney Magic.

My son decided that he is now afraid of characters after he was not last year, but my daughter may have started this fear. This is what she thought of Goofy:
.
My sister then showed up early and had dinner with us, which helped immensely as I was not sure how to get food with the two little ones, but they did let me bring my double stroller into the restaurant. Here are a few more photos of dinner. It was a wide array of characters!

Thanks for reading! Yes, the picture of her reaction to Goofy is priceless.

Now... on to Mickey's Trick or Treat Party....

We arrived a little after 7 pm. We walked right up to the gate and they scanned our tickets. The double stroller did not fit through the gates. We then had to try to go across six lines of people to the far end of the entrance where they could open a larger gate to let us in. The decorations were amazing! I had been to the MNSSHP in Disney World last year so I was excited to see what Disney had in store at California Adventure!

Here are some pictures of the decorations. I uploaded them to photobucket in medium size, but they are still uploading large here.... sorry!

There are more to come later.

We then started by heading over to the Pirate's Wharf as DS loved the dance parties last year, but this year he did not want to dance. So we took pictures with Captain Hook, who liked DS's pirate costume, Wendy, who loved DD's Tinker Bell costume and Peter Pan.

Then we let DS play the games in the wharf and he enjoyed this! We also liked the masks that they could color and the games on the tables.

From here we went over to see if the carnival games were free like people had posted from last year, but they were not so headed to the carousel. On the way we met Ariel and Mulan.

Great decorations!

I am not a fan of paying extra for after hours parties but it sure does look like fun.

More Mickey's Trick or Treat Party Photos

Sorry for the long wait. My little one is still sick and this time it is a double ear infection. Next we walked around the back part of California Adventure and trick-or-treated at the lines that weren't too long. One station was giving away Ghiradelli chocolates! Then my sister watched the two kids so I could ride Soarin without a wait! I love that ride! Then we stopped to pose with a few more characters along the way!

Then I decided to ride the TOT. I had ridden it at Disney Studios (MGM), but not here. There was no line and I got to sit in the front row. I also snapped a HM photo before getting on the elevator!

More MToTP: Dance Party

Last year DS loved the dance party and couldn't wait to dance with the characters. This year he decided he was scared of them so I just took some pictures of some of the characters that were out for the party.

Then we discovered my DS's favorite part of the party. He loved the Monsters Inc. Ride! So we took lots of photos of the ride. We rode it twice in a row without having to wait in line even though the cue for the line was decorated so cute.

The end of the party

Finally, the night started to wind down. We saw lots of other photo ops with characters, but we did not want to wait in line. We did lots of trick or treating at the end of the night when there were no lines and the cast members would just hand you handfuls of candy. We also walked through the Bugs Life area and saw the living scarecrows. Then we took one more gander at the line for the new Toy Story ride, but with five minutes until the party's end the line was still a 25 minute wait and my two little ones would not make it so we called it a night. Overall, it was a fun evening and I loved the decorations!

You are so funny with the stroller character pics! My DD's were a year and 5 days apart so I totally had that double stroller action!

You are such a good mom!

I really love the idea of the dance party.I think I would like the trick or treat party for that alone. I'm a big fan of the dance floor with kids.. it's the main reason I love weddings.

Great update!

PS Today is NATIONAL HUSBANDS MAKE DINNER DAY!!! Spread the news!

Day Two: Downtown Disney, San Diego and Disneyland

Well, day 2 started at 2 am when DD decided it was time to wake up. She had some milk and went back to sleep. Then at 5 am both DS and DD were wide awake. It was 7am back home so they thought it was time to get up. This was a small boutique hotel with tile floor hallways and I was trying to keep them from waking everyone up so we went to the "living room". I had a report to enter from the day before and went over the computer nook area. This hotel offered free high speed internet and a computer for guests to use. The night before the hotel staff scanned a document I needed into their scanner and emailed it to me. The customer service here was outstanding and they were so friendly and helpful! So I had snacks for the two kids while I tried to type up a report. Then about 6 am the staff set up the free continental breakfast and I fed my DS some cereal, yogurt and pastries. Then we went back to the room to pack. My DH's plane was supposed to get in at 10 am in San Diego so I decided that we should leave by about 8 am to get there on time. We checked out a little before 8 and headed to the parking lot. Here is DD in the stroller outside the hotel.

[/IMG]

And another photo of the hotel:

[/IMG]

From this point forward the day goes haywire. As I am putting the second child in the car my DH husband calls and he missed his connecting flight due to delays with the first leg of his flight. He is now not scheduled to get in until 5 pm. I told him that we would hang out while he tried to figure things out. At this point I am not sure where to go or if I should unload the kids from the car again and try to check back in to the hotel for a few hours. So, I took this opportunity to spend some more time in downtown Disney. Once we were walking from the parking lot to downtown Disney my husband calls again to tell me that he now has another flight and he should be in at 2 pm so I only need to entertain 2 kids for 4 more hours until we head to San Diego.

I get my son out of the car and discover that he has a dirty diaper. The only place that I know has a restroom close to where we are is the Disneyland Hotel. We entered the hotel and I heard someone ahead of me asking where the restroom is and she pointed to the bottom of a flight of stairs. Since the stroller wouldn't make it down the stairs I walked around the corner and took the elevator down. They did not end up at the same place. I was in a basement with about four doors that all said cast member only. Since my DS had a dirty diaper I did not buckle him into the stroller and as I turned to hold the doors to pull the stroller out of the elevator he hopped out of the stroller in the two seconds that my back was turned. The doors closed. I frantically pushed the button, but the doors would not open. At this point I was hysterical and crying. Two housekeeping cast members came out and asked what was wrong. I told them that I lost my special needs son in the elevator and that he can't talk and I didn't know what to do. They told me to stay put and asked what he looked like. It never occurred to me at the time to turn on my digital camera and show them a picture of what he looked like and what he was wearing that day. The only thing my husband told me before I left was "don't lose DS". He has a tendency to wander and he doesn't understand danger. Then Disney security was involved. The elevator door finally opened after what seemed an eternity and DS was not on it! Now I was even more panicked. I could not believe I had lost my son at Disney! Then about five minutes later the first cast member that assisted me opened the elevator and she was holding my lost DS. I was now crying even harder since I was so glad to have him back. He was also sobbing hysterically. I told the two housekeeping cast members about how my husband's plane had been delayed and how he had all of the luggage and that I had only packed enough for one day until he got there and that I was almost out of diapers and wipes. I was a mess and I am normally composed. They brought me out a package of cucumber scented Huggies baby wipes and they told me if I needed diapers to just let the front desk know. They knew I wasn't staying at that hotel, but they treated me like a guest anyway. I could not thank these two women enough.

Now, I decided to go back to the elevator by Goofy's Kitchen since I knew that there was a working large restroom upstairs and I took them to change both of them. When we were done changing diapers I was still sniffling a little from my traumatic ordeal. The head of catering came over to ask if we were ok. I told her I was and told her how I had lost DS and how wonderful the staff was and how they took care of us. She asked if she could get us anything and I said we were ok. I was sitting on a bench in the empty upstairs hallway to nurse my daughter. She told us to wait right where we were. She brought us a Halloween Mickey donut and a coconut covered donut and two bottles of water. The cast members at this hotel were amazing. They made me feel so much better. She also told me that she had lost one of her children once.

Here is my son with his police sticker on:

[/IMG]

Finally, we were composed, fed and ready to walk around downtown Disney. We did some shopping and visited with more friendly cast members that commented on my son's glasses. Many cast members also have special needs children. Finally at about 10:45 I decided we should probably eat some lunch. We went to Rain Forest Cafe since I had the Safari Card and a $5 coupon. I was told that since it was 5 minutes before 11 that they would still be serving breakfast. I had no problem with this, but I asked if it would be lunch when I was seated since I would not be seated until after 11 am and she said no. We did not order until 11:20 am, but we were served breakfast.

Breakfast:

San Diego and back to DL

We finished breakfast after paying only $11 with tip for our meal after all of the discounts! Then we decided to head to San Diego. It should have been an hour and a half to a two hour trip, but it took three hours. At one point we went 9 miles in 45 minutes due to an accident. Then I decided to drive in the carpool lane to speed things up a little. When we got to San Diego the 5 split from the highway and I was in the carpool lane and could not get to the exit. Then I finally got off a few more exits up and tried to find somewhere to ask for help. I pulled into a valet parking area outside a restaurant in the Embassy Suites parking lot. The valet was so nice and gave me directions back to the 5 and how to get to the airport. My husband only had to wait about a half an hour for us. Then the luggage barely fit in our "mid-sized" car. We made it to the Town and Country hotel in San Diego. They give us our room and we again verify that they have a crib for us. We go up to our room and open the door and there is someone's stuff in the room! Housekeeping gets involved and calls to the front desk and reminds them that the previous guest had not checked out yet. So then they have to send the bell hop and try to find us another room, but this one has no view. At this point, I don't care. I have not slept in two days and I was so tired. We get our room and get back in the car to head back to Anaheim. The original plan was to go to Disneyland Sunday night, but that was before Miley Cyrus announced her birthday party and changed our plans. So my sister is meeting us there and calls us at 4 to ask where we are. I told her we were running late. We finally got there about 5 pm. It was misting. Other CA residents on the tram told us it only rains about 9 times a year and we just happened to hit one of the rainy days. We used the twilight tickets from the convention to get discount tickets to get in.

Finally, we were in the park! We stopped to get a bite to eat at the Mexican restaurant in the park and there must have been an altercation before we got to the patio. People were being interviewed and there was a security guard with a gun on his belt. I had never observed one of these at Disney before. After dinner we went to get fast passes to the Haunted Mansion as it is my favorite ride and I really wanted to see it decorated with the Jack Skeleton decor.

Here are some pictures of the outside:

More DL

Sorry, one Toon Town photo got mixed in with the HM photos. We rode the Pooh ride prior to heading to Toon Town. I was disappointed that the honey pots did not bounce when Tigger appeared like they do at MK.

We rode the Roger Rabbit ride, walked around Toon Town and wandered in and out of Minnie and Mickey's houses. We took DS and DD to meet Mickey.

Then we rode Gadget's coaster.

Then finally, what I had been waiting for.... the HM!
We took our fast passes and the line was continuously moving so it only took about 5 minutes. I loved looking at all of the changes. While in line I took a picture of the Hearse and accidentally "blinded" a cast member with my flash.

She then walked over to where I was standing in line, opened the link in the line where I was and asked me and my sister to follow her. She told us she had a punishment to fit the crime. We were not sure what was going on. She told us to stand in front of the Hearse and she took our picture with my camera. Then she placed us back in line. It is a great photo!

Then right after we got off the ride my sister stayed with the kids and my DH and I rode the ride again with the child swap. The cast member let me keep my child swap certificate, but we did not go again. Here are some more outdoor photos:

Then I apologize in advance for the blurriness of the following photos, but they were taken inside the HM without a flash. Someone did shoot a flash photo while we were on the ride and a voice came over the loud speaker to remind guests that flash photography was not allowed! It was not me as you can see by the blurriness!

We visited the baby care area to fed my DD and change both kids. We saw part of the parade. Then we rode Pirates of the Caribbean and everyone was tired even though it was only around 10 pm (Midnight back home) so we left. I wish we could have done more, but considering the day it was enough.

We headed back to San Diego. It was a long drive at night! We got to the room and there was no crib! I called down to the front desk and they said that they would try to locate one. They could not find one. We had to let DD sleep in bed with us, which we had never done before. We put my DS in the other queen sized bed in the middle and tucked pillows on both sides of him so hopefully he would not fall out. I just wonder what the guy, whose room we were given originally, was thinking when he returned to his room that night and it had a crib in it. I am sure that is where the crib went. They provided us with 4 coupons to the breakfast buffet. Since DS is only three at least it provided us with two days of free breakfast.

Up next: Day 3 in San Diego!
