Knowing today was going to be a long journey we set off shortly after 9am. First we had to go back through part of Yosemite and towards Crane Flat. Once at Crane Flat we filled the jeep up with gas and we were off on our way to Tioga Pass. We knew it could get quite snowy as Tioga Pass had only opened 10 days ago. The scenery once again was stunning with huge open meadows and mountains in the background. Soon we were making our climb and the marker posts got higher and higher. We stopped off for a quick stretch of the legs at a lake in the middle of Tioga Road and it was very calm and serene. You could see on some of the cliff climbers who must have come got up at the crack of dawn. As we got higher more snow was lying on the ground and then we got to Tioga Pass at 9945 feet it was the highest we went ![]() Then the snow was quite thick in places. But more patchy in others. Soon though we were descending quite rapidly, out onto the open road. For quite a distance we followed the Sierra Nevadas and could see the snow capped peaks. At one point a brushfire could easily be seen. Soon the roads were straight and very very quiet. The journey would be a long one. We did stop to get some gas as the rate at which the jeep was using it at the higher altitudes was quite frightening!! Then we were in the desert. It was amazing how the scenery had changed in the past 6 hours. After 7 and an half hours we were in Barstow and soon found our hotel which looked very very new We soon checked in and had a wander around the pool looked very nice. By now it was evening and we needed some food so we drove into the downtown area of Barstow which on initial impressions looked rather run down, we were glad we were staying just outside of town. Not knowing where to eat, we finally settled on the KFC which was about 400 yards from our hotel. After eating the bucket of chicken, corn, potato wedges and coleslaw we went back to the hotel and decided as it was such a warm evening, 93f , a swim and spa was in order. The pool wasn’t very warm and I didn’t spend long in there! We got in the spa, much warmer, and got chatting to a chap from San Diego who often travels through the area as he is a civilian in the Navy and there are a lot of Naval weapons testing bases in the desert which he often visits. Soon it was time to head in for a good sleep after a long day travelling.Claire

A fantastic trip report. I am reading with great interest as we hope to do a similar itinerary (SFO/Lake Tahoe/Yosemite/Disneyland) next year. Just worried that our kids (who'll be aged 10 and 8) would find all that travelling a bit much. SFO looked wonderful! Do you think there would be plenty to keep the kids occupied?

Another splendid report, Claire. Thanks again for including the stunning photos. It is startling to see the scenery change so rapidly, isn't it? Also surprising how quickly a very hot desert cools (as did your swimming pool) when the sun starts to go down. Did you experience any altitude sickness when you were up nearly 10,000 feet?
