Cool 3 states, 3 weeks and 2000 miles in a Jeep - Day 5

Tuesday June 20th 2006

Today was the England game so we thought we would try and watch it and as luck would have it our hotel had 'Knuckles' a sports bar with a huge tv screen and smaller ones dotted all over. So we got up and had the same brekkie as Monday and headed out for a wander down to Pier 39 and a chance to get some souveniers.

We had seen the Virgin Holidays rep briefly at San Fran airport and he advised us to pop into the office before we left as some roads near Yosemite were closed. Luckily the office was in the holiday Inn opposite the Hyatt so on the way back we stopped off and were told about the road closure at the C140 due to a landslide. More details here and here. So we took the map showing where the road closure was and headed back to Knuckles, as due to the time difference the game started at 12 midday. We got there about 11.45am and the bar was quite quiet so we got a coke each and sat at one of the high tables with stools near the bar.

During the game there were frequent free refills on the drinks By halftime the bar was quite busy and there were cheers when England scored, it appeared a popular place to watch the game for both tourists and ex-pats.

Once the game was over we left a healthy tip and went off to get the jeep from valet as it was time for Nathan's credit card to get a bashing :D So off we went to Redwood City which was about a 30 minute drive south of San Fran on the 101. Once again we found some good steep roads on the way out of the city.

As we went further south the temperature rose higher and higher, until it reached 96f!!! Once at Redwood City we found the location which was a warehouse in an industrial area But once inside it had the largest selection of motorbike clothes you have ever seen. It was then time to find everything on the list! After about an hour and a half we have found everything it had been tried on for size so the credit card was then produced and the items were paid for. We slowly made our way back to San Francisco and wanting to avoid the airport as it would be approaching the rush hour when we got there we went up the 280 which was a pleasant drive back into San Fran. Once back in the city we went up and down some nice step hills once more.

We then arrived back at the hotel and unloaded the jeep. Not really knowing where to eat we looked in the guide book and chose Cafe Pescatore which was nice and nearby at the Tuscan Inn. Upon arrival it was busy and we had to wait for about 20 minutes so we went o the bar and had a beer Once seated we ordered, to start with I had Zuppa con vongole - Creamy Clam Chowder and Nathan had Bruschetta - Grilled Country Bread, Diced Tomatoes, Basil, Garlic, Olive Oil, Shaved Parmesan. We also ordered a bottle of water and a bottle of 2003 Kendall-Jackson, Central Coast. We got talking to the waiter who enquiried where we came from so we said 'England just South of London on the coast' as we usually do and he asked again where and said he had studied in Hastings, Brighton and Eastbourne! Such a surprise as rarely does anyone in the US know Eastbourne, but he then explained he was Polish and had been to England to study English a few years ago and was now at University in San Francisco. It was now time for entree so I had a Calzone con pollo - Folded Pizza, Grilled Chicken, Baby Spinach, Mushrooms, Marinara Sauce, Fresh Ricotta

While Nathan had a Rusitca Pizza - Spicy Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, Peppers, Marinara Sauce, Mozzarella

The meal was lovely and we were too full for dessert so slowly wandered back to the hotel for our last night in San Francisco.
