Cool 3 states, 3 weeks and 2000 miles in a Jeep - Day 4

Monday June 19th 2006

Today we woke and got ready for a nice drive into the countryside and more importantly towards the wine growing region :champers: We went down to breakfast to find that the buffet had gone, must have been a weekend thing, but we had a lovely full cooked breakfast called 'The Fog-lifter' (I think it had something about fog in it!). Anyway it was Two eggs any style served with bacon - We'll cook them your favorite way! With roasted fingerling potatoes and your choice of toast. Plus it had lovely asparagus with it, yummy Nathan doesn't like it so I had 8 pieces in a swap with my tomatos Anyway after brekkie we got the car and drove towards the Golden Gate Bridge stopping on the San Fran side for some piccies. There were quite a few surfers out where the waves broke, nutters!

We paused before leaving just to see the size of the cables used

It was then time to drive across the bridge.

We then drove up towards the Marine Headlands and had a great view back across to San Francisco, the mist was just hanging and the city looked hazy in the distance but boy was it getting warm.

Next stop was Sausalito, although we came here last time it is a pretty place to wander around, with small boutique shops and art galleries along with some parks and fountains.

We walked from the car park to the promenade along the waters edge, nosing in the shops as we went. It was now mid morning so we stopped in a deli and got a bag of crisps and drink, then sat outside on the seats provided and watched the world go by and the view across the Bay, before having a walk back to the car.

Next stop would be the wine country and Sonoma. As Sonoma was recommended in the guide book we stopped off here and they weren't wrong it had a lovely old world charm to it and the center of the Square with the park was lovely

Next it was off to find a winery, en route we found some fab houses amongst the vines!

We finally stopped at the Buena Vista winery but most of the info was about the making and no actual walks near to the vineyards. The cellars were huge and very cool less than 60f.

We left soon after deciding to view the vineyards from the open road as we drove along through the area.

After a look at the map we decided to come back down through Oakland so we could go on the Oakland Bay Bridge.

We were running short of water and some snacks so as soon as we saw the chance we took it and we were in Albertsons Happily stocked with food and drink we continued back to the hotel, but caught a little traffic coming back into the city.

Once back at the hotel we unpacked and headed out to Pier 39 and Bubba Gumps Here we ordered dinner I had to start with a cup of old fashioned New England clam chowder and Nathan had Mama Gump's garlic bread basket. For entree I had Bubba's after the storm 'Bucket of boat trash' - Tender shrimp, slipper lobster, and Mahi Mahi cooked Baja style with creamy coleslaw and fries

While Nathan had Captain's fish and chips - Battered Mahi Mahi with creamy coleslaw and fries

We were both quite full after this so had a slow walk back to the hotel and went to sleep after another full and busy day.

I will add that we were glad we used the cable cars the previous day as on this day they had come to a grinding halt, when one of the cables became so frayed that the whole line had to be shut down for some hours whilst the section of the cable was replaced! News report.

What did you need to know about parking? As we mainly used public transport in the city or walked.

I remember being amazed by the size of the cables used by the cable cars too.

Great pictures of your day
