Smile A whole new World... UPDATED with Animal Kingdom Day

I’ve been reading and lurking on the Dis for a while now and after finding other Wish Trippers I’ve decided to start my own PTR. So... here we go, I guess. We are so excited to be able to fulfill Lydia's Wish to go see Mickey Mouse and the Princesse with the help of the Rainbow Society in Canada!!!

I’ll start with the Cast:
Linda – me, 26 and a sahm
Michael – 27 and the ever-popular Papa
Lydia – 3 in July and our Wish Child
Tobias – 1 in June and tagging along for the ride

DH’s parents will also be joining us for 3 days and staying at a hotel nearby.

Lydia’s Story:

Lydia was born in July 2005 and we were overjoyed to be blessed with a beautiful and healthy baby girl. She was sweet and patient from the start and we felt so lucky... She had some bouts of pneumonia in her first year and a half and during her last one the doctor examining her asked us if we knew about her heart murmur. No one had ever noticed this before and we were a bit worried. They reassured us and said that most murmurs are innocent and not to worry. We were sent to the Heart Center at our local Children’s Hospital where they diagnosed a PDA (an open duct that usually closes at birth). It was serious enough but could be easily fixed without sugery (they hoped to be able to fix it during a heart catheterization, where they go in through the groin and up into the heart). I was 6 months pregnant with Tobias at the time and we hoped to get the cath over with before the birth. Luckily she got in very fast (someone cancelled). During the cath they were able to take a closer look at Lydia’s aorta and found that her aortic arch was pretty much completely closed. So they weren’t able to repair it... She was scheduled for open-heart surgery. The thought of someone breaking open every rib in my baby’s body was unbearable..... She was not quite two. We arranged to leave for Edmonton where the surgery would take place all the while trying to wrap our minds around the fact that we might not bring her back home...
The surgery was successful and I remember calling my mom (in Norway, where I’m from) and the only thing I could say was “she’s ALIVE!” We went through a few rough weeks after surgery. Her body healed well but she was very depressed. Her eyes were dark and empty... We tought we had lost our little sunshine. But she bounced back! Her outlook now is really good and we’re keeping our fingers crosssed for no more surgeries. Three weeks after we came home from the hospital, Lydia’s brother, Tobias, was born, so there wasn’t much time to recover. It’s been quite the year for us.

Here are some pictures of our family (I hope I managed to resize them...):

Lydia enjoying some strawberries

Her brother Tobias enjoying some peas.... lol

A family photo when Lydia was a year old

Lydia and her Papa

Lydia and Tobias playing

Lydia showing off her new dress and... um... her new underwear! lol

Bathtime

Lydia the night before her surgery (as I rocked her to sleep that night she seemed to shrink in my amrs and become a tiny baby again and I didn't know if it was the last time I was able to do that...)

Here is a link to a picture of Lydia right after her surgery. I didn't want to post it so you have the option of looking at it if you want to. It is kind of a hard picture to see... There were 7 lines going into her tiny body...

A blessing after the heartache

A few weeks after we came home from the hospital some friends of ours invited us over for supper and said they had something to tell us. Our friend’s brother had cancer as a young boy and got to make a wish and go to Give Kids the World Village by Disney World. They told us about how wonderful it was, going to the parks and staying in a 2 bedroom villa in this magical place. Then they let us know that they’d put Lydia’s name forward to the Rainbow Society for a Wish. We were so excited, but didn’t really think it possible that Lydia would get to make a wish like that. As so many others, we were under the assumption that Wish making was for terminally ill children. So you can imagine our surprise when the Rainbow Society phoned us to let us know that Lydia would get a wish granted!!!!! Lydia was alreayd totally smitten with Mickey Mouse (from the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse show, lol) and knew exactly what she wanted. She still says it every day: “we’re going to see Mickey Mouse!!!!” In the weeks since we found out about the Wish we’ve (or rather I’ve.... ) been researching like crazy. And what we know about Give Kids the World is just AMAZING!! What an incredible place! If you want to take a look, here is a link to their pre arrival pages: www.gktw.org/pre
So we are leaving December 5th and coming home on the 12th. I’ve read and heard that Disney is really great in early December so we are SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! None of us have ever been before but I’ve dreamt about going since I was a little girl. It will be so much fun seeing Lydia’s reactions and living the magic trough her.

We have a couple of things that could potentially change our plans. We are wating for my Permanent Resident card to be renewed before I can apply for my new Norwegian passport. So we are hoping and praying that it will come through in time. Otherwise we’ll have to reschedule for January.... But we’ve put a rush on it explaning the reason and hope that the bureaucracy will have mercy on us.

Here is a couple of videolinks of Lydia talking about our trip and her singing.

She is totally babbling in the middle of this one, not quite sure why....?

Oh poor baby! I know what you mean about the darkness. Emy had the same thing for a few months after her surgery. But amazingly enough Kids are SO resiliant and she's happy once again! Great start on the TR!

Time for a small update:

I have been working on our itinerary and so far I’ve only changed it... um... 10 times!
This is what I have right now:

8 days (2 travel, 6 fun days): 3 Disney, 2 Universal and 1 SeaWorld

Day 1 Friday – arrive and enjoy the Village (Pirates and Princesses party in evening)
Day 2 Saturday – Universal Studios (1/2 day)
Day 3 Sunday – Islands of Adventure
Day 4 Monday – Epcot (1/2 day and pick up Grandparents)
Day 5 Tuesday – Animal Kingdom
Day 6 Wednesday – Magic Kingdom
Day 7 Thursday – SeaWorld (1/2 day) + Christmas in the Village
Day 8 Friday – leave for home

I’m really debating whether we should just do two Magic Kingdom days and skip Animal Kingdom.... But we are really looking forward to the safari and the Finding Nemo show... Hm.... Well, something to keep thinking about, I suppose. Epcot is something we want to do for sure, both to do the Living Seas and to visit the Norwegian Pavillion (as I’m from Norway). DH was mentioning that maybe we can ask whether we could get an extra Disney day from our Wish organization as I think that will be the park Lydia will enjoy the most. I think we’d probalby give up our one Universal day.
On the half days we will go home after lunch to have an afternoon nap at the house and then just hang out in the Village until bedtime, playing on the playground and going swimming. If we all of a sudden feel like it, we always have the option of returning to one of the parks for the evening but I can imagine that would just be a big hassle.... On the days we are planning on staying in the parks all day, I hope the kids will be able to have a nap in their strollers. I have a feeling I’ll be missing MY nap on those days, lol.

what an amazing journey! I'm so glad you get to have a little fun now. I know about the dark times too, and they're not fun. Especially when you look into your child's eyes and see innocence lost.

Am following your progress!!
