Episode 3

Episode 3: “You’re Going To Do What? WHEN?”

Hey guys! Welcome to Episode 3!!

My hubby and I are not strangers to separate vacations. For the first four years of our marriage he was owned by the United States Army. They would often send him on short deployments to Afghanistan, Fairbanks, AK, and Fort Lewis, WA for PLDC. To sum it up, he was gone a lot. During those times I would usually take a vacation home to visit family. He, as previously mentioned, enjoys hunting and fishing and while living in Alaska on the Army’s dime he made the most of it! I was known as a fishing widow during the summer. DH would make the notorious midnight runs to the Russian river catch his limit of salmon before midnight, take a cat nap, get up after midnight and catch his limit for that day and then head to PT in the morning. He also took many hunting trips; he’d be gone a week here or a week there trying to kill a dall sheep, a mountain goat, caribou, or a grizzly bear. He was successful on the grizzly bear.

Say hi to Beth (yes, we named our grizzly bear)!! Anyway, we were okay with the idea of separate vacations. While I was on my second trip to Disney, he killed his grizzly bear. When I went to Disney with my parents to celebrate my graduation, he wasn’t able to go because the Army wouldn’t release him for my dates! LOL.

Well, let’s fast-forward 2 years to my living room in early June 2008. Most of our vacations since Alaska have been together to visit family. I knew at this time that my husband had a hunting trip planned with his father and cousin for the fall. I was cool with that as he hasn’t been on a major hunting trip for 2 years and his trigger finger is getting a bit itchy. So far when I asked about the trip I got non-committal answers. But after a conversation with his father and the arrival of his hunting licenses, I realized that most of the details were set. Like any good wife I asked about them. It played out like this…

Me: “So honey, did you guys decide where you are going to hunt?”
NDH: “Yup, on a ranch in Wyoming”

Me: “What exactly are you going for?”
NDH: “Antelope and rabbits”

Me: “You’re going to kill a bunny?” (said in very sad and pathetic voice)
NDH: “Probably”

Me: “So when are you going?”
NDH: SILENCE…I kid you not, it was silent.

Me: “You do know when you are going right?”
NDH: “Yeah, sometime in September.”

TIME OUT: Okay we’ve been married 5 years at this point. I know my husband pretty well. I know that something is not quite right here, and he’s trying to figure out the best way to tell me. Ladies with hubbies-- you know exactly what I mean. He had that look, he used that voice, and I was just waiting. Whatever it was, it wasn’t going to be good. I decided to be a bit coy too.

Me: “September, umm good time to hunt, I think? How long you going to be gone?”
NDH: “ A week”

Me: “ So when in September are you leaving?”
At this point my hubby knew he might as well get this over with, sort of like pulling off a band-aid.
NDH: “I leave the morning of September 28th”.

I’m blonde, but I’m not that blonde! After quickly doing some math calculations I looked him straight in the face.

Me: “So you’ll be returning on October 7th?”
NDH: “ That sounds about right!”

Me: “So you’ll be gone over October 2nd and October 3rd?”
NDH: At this point he just nodded.

Me: “You mean to tell me you scheduled a hunting trip over my birthday and my anniversary?”
NDH: “Well, technically my father did the scheduling.” (As if this was the answer to everything.)

TIMEOUT: We had reached an impasse at this point. I could do one of two things A) Get mad, ‘cuz seriously? My birthday and my anniversary?? B) Make sure that whatever I got out of the deal was going to be seriously good. I chose B. Yelling and crying weren’t going to get us anywhere. I was sure by this point that he had already purchased his plane tickets, so there was no use crying over spilled milk. Option B seemed more like a compromise, and we all know marriage is about compromise. He would get to go on his hunting trip, relatively guilt free. I was going to be okay with him going on his hunting trip, completely satisfied with what I would gain from it.

Me: “Well, I guess what’s done is done. I take it you have thought of ways to make sure that while you’re gone I will still have a good birthday and anniversary?”
NDH: “Of course (insert really cute sly smile, I hate that he can do that LOL), what type of husband do you take me for?” (I just sort of stared at him after that.)

That is how I found out that I would be spending my birthday and anniversary without my husband. Stay tuned for Episode 4: “The Gifts Begin Arriving; A Husband’s Redemption!”

I'm from the Detroit area and I also watch the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup over and over. Disney and the Red Wings are my two favorite things. I want to get married at Disney World and then have a reception for the rest of my family at Joe Louis Arena (where the Wings play for anyone who doesn't know).

Great job, can't wait to read more.

In this case my father in law was driving up there so when we went to visit them over the summer the guns came with us and my FIL drove them to Wyoming. When in Alaska he had a hard gun case that he would claim as one of his checked bags for hunting purposes!!

Thanks for stopping in to read!

Episode 4: The First Gift

First of all: Huge Thank you to My Editor!

Episode 4: “The Gifts Begin Arriving”

Life went on after my husband’s shocking announcement and we were in full-blown vacation mode. As teachers, we take advantage of our summer breaks. This past summer NDH took a seminary class at Piedmont while I taught a four-day “Chemistry Literacy for Middle School” seminar in Tallahassee. Then we literally jetted for a family reunion in Seattle, WA with my parents. We returned home briefly to feed our kitties and then packed up the car to drive to Michigan to visit his parents. After a nice relaxing visit we returned back home with enough time for me to do laundry and repack to go on my church’s mission trip to Quebec. This trip was the highlight of my summer. It was my greatest privilege to help out our missionaries and to spend time getting to know people in my church better. It was upon my return home that I received my first gift.

I must begin with the fact that I am a horrible flyer. I get extreme anxiety during take offs and landings and I much prefer driving instead of flying. So after a 5-hour delay in Baltimore and a total of six takeoffs and landings, I was thankful to be on the solid ground I call home. As I walked off the plane (okay I may have run LOL) and headed to the security checkpoint, I saw my hubby. He was such a site for sore eyes…boy had I missed him. In his hands were a bouquet of flowers (I simply adore flowers, if only I could keep them alive at home LOL) and a small gift wrapped in birthday paper. After a long hug and a kiss found only in romantic chic flicks, he handed me my present.

Me: “It’s wrapped in birthday paper?”
NDH: “Umm, well, it’s a birthday gift. Actually it’s gift number one!”

I love to unwrap presents. My mom loves to tell the story about how for my first two Christmases and Birthdays I just unwrapped plain boxes for an hour. I simply love to unwrap.

Me: “It’s really a gift for me?”
NDH: Just shakes his head with a cute smile

So of course I rip into it and it revealed a card in an envelope. Only my husband, who understands my love of unwrapping gifts, would wrap a card for me LOL. Inside the well-chosen birthday card were two slips of paper. I opened it up and SURPRISE! It was an itinerary. Now it must be said that I was tired and completely sick of flying and travel in general, and the idea of another trip didn’t exactly thrill me at the moment. Thankfully I have an astute hubby who must have read my mind.

NDH: “Baby, it’s not for you, look again.”

So I did and what I saw brought tears to my eyes. It was flight information for my mom, dated October 1st thru October 6th. I was rendered speechless. For those who know me, this was no small feat.

NDH: “ I know it’s a bummer to you that I won’t be here for your birthday and anniversary. I really didn’t want you to spend those days alone so I found a most suitable replacement, your mom.”

I was so blown away. This was one of those “moments”. The moment when you think, “Wow, I don’t know what I did to be so blessed, but I thank God for him.” This one gift alone could have redeemed him for life. However, I would soon learn that my hubby was intent on spoiling me. Which is a huge surprise because we tend to be VERY frugal and have parents that often help with travel expenses so we don’t have to go broke visiting LOL!

Coming Up Next: Episode 5: “Gifts 2 &3: The Big Guns Are Rolled Out!” In this episode the Disney Surprise will be revealed… I promise LOL!
