Is Airtran going to go out of business soon?

I know that there are some DISer on here that are really good at keeping on top of all the news regarding how well airlines are doing. And I know that there have been some reports that Airtran is not doing so well. Now I also know that may airlines are struggling because of the price of gas But can any of you knowledgable DISer tell me- Do you think Airtran could go under soon?? I am considering booking with them for our upcoming trip? I know many people are, so we should be good right?? I just don't know.... thanks Oh and I would be more than interested to read any articles anyone may think are helpful Thanks again

Make sure you read the reviews on 3cents and other web sites. There are some pretty scary stories about this airline!

None of which have anything to do with the financial solvency of the airline. The majority of customer complaints against airlines are based in the customer not understanding the contract they have entered into when purchasing a fare.

When you purchase a fare from an airline you are purchasing travel from that airline on that date from point A to point B. They have every right to change your flight/connections/seat selection/etc.

We have flown with them before, and had a great experience, so I am not too worried about that. Maybe I should be knocking on wood now though...

I flew AirTran the last two weeks and they were fine.....not on schedule, but fine. Clean aircraft, very personable pilots and flight attendants and many flights over-sold (handing out free vouchers).

What could happen is they would file for bankrupcy and re-structure. The big impact would be on union contracts - but paying passengers probably would not notice any more changes than they see now. Ok, ok, Air Tran is making plenty of FLIGHT changes, I admit.

Many of the legacy airlines have already gone this route and they are still flying.......with pilots, flight attendants and mechanics now making 45% less than they did before, minimal pensions and no health care in retirement.

But hey...this is ALL new to the airlines who who knows what 12 months could bring!!!

ewwee, not a fan of AirTran, we flew home on Airtran back in 2004 and I literally has my seat (wooden board cover with fabric no padding) slide out from under my behind. I am a petite 5'2" 105lb woman so I don't think that should have happended but other than the seats being like that I had no other issues.

That is strange. I've flown Air Tran a few times and have always had a comfortable cushioned seat (just like any other airline). In fact, we are flying Air Tran in Sept and also in Jan. Other than slight schedule changes we've never had a problem with them (nice newer planes and very friendly FAs and pilots.)

I should hope not, there are certainly enough of us here using Airtran, that our business alone should keep them going.

Yes, that's really it, in a nutshell.

Very true. Especially these days, passengers really need to better understand what it is they're purchasing when they purchase airline tickets, and stop relying on their personal feelings about what they wish they were purchasing when they purchase airline tickets.

Unfortunately for the airlines, for way too many passengers, "our business" just helps them lose money faster. Discount airfare generally doesn't cover the costs of offering the flight.

That happened to DH a few years ago. Well his seat was properly padded, however it became detached from the base right before takeoff. The FAs kindly moved us to business class (unfortunately not enough room for my mom and brother up there too). I'm not sure if the flight was completely sold out or not and thats why they moved us or if it was b/c we had bulkhead seats so DH could fit his legs more comfortably and the only other comparable room would have been the exit row (which was occupied) or business class.

That upgrade got us hooked on business class and we try to upgrade to it every time we fly. We even lucked out and got business class round trip for $20 more than coach when they had a fare sale back in april or may.

AirTran Holdings, the parent Company or AirTran Airways, announced a 2nd quarter loss today.

See http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080729/earns_airtran.html?.v=4

I really wouldn't worry about AirTran going out of business any time soon. In fact, I think AirTran is well positioned to survive -- and, in fact, to prosper in the long run.

AirTran Airways is the number two carrier at Atlanta, competing with number one Delta Air Lines. AirTran has a lower operating cost structure than Delta, with newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft and overall leaner operations. As Delta cuts back, AirTran is in a good position to pick up incremental business -- including business travelers who typically pay more per seat than leisure travelers. (AirTran is also making cuts, but my guess is that AirTran will ultimately gain market share compared to Delta.)

Of course, nobody really knows what things will be like for the airlines in 2, 5, or 10 years. But my guess is that AirTran will still be around.

We've flown air tran numerous times and never had any major problems other than schedule changes, we're hoping to fly them for our next trip also so we hope they don't go under.
