Where's the warmest spot in the US to vacation in late December?

I need a beach, lots of sun and heat and some waves!! I have miles to fly my family anywhere in the continental US but need some ideas. We usually do Mexico or Caribbean but don't want to pay for airfare this year. Where's a great spot during the end of December for lounging on the beach, maybe some fishing, a bit of shopping, etc.??
I was going to post this on the trip boards but could only find Disney type threads.

I was going to say Arizona until I read "beaches". That pretty much rules that out. Key West in FL is probably statistically the warmest in Dec.

I would say Southern Florida. San Diego can be nice as well, I would imagine South Padre Island can be also, but I would imagine the most reliable for that time of year would be So. Florida.

So, is the water in Southern Florida warm in the winter? I know southern California the water is too chilly for my taste. And what about the Gulf of Mexico, maybe Southern Texas, is it warm there?

Being from Texas...it is always warm here!!! South Padre Island is nice but very small. Not lots to do but beach. The do have a neat turtle rescue center and lots of cruises into the Gulf. Hopefully it will still be there after Dolly hits tomorrow!! You can look on accuweather.com to find out stats for where ever you want to go. The water is probably the best of the state. Not bad, we just got back from there. Water temp was in mid 70's. The easiest place to fly into would be Harlington and then drive down.
Good Luck!

I've been to Key West in January and it was wonderful. Weather was perfect, water was warm enough, and the only tourists were the snow birds.

If we ate dinner after 6PM, we had the place almost to ourselves! We loved it and I can highly recommend it!

Go to Southern FL. The weather in S California is not warm enough for the beach in Dec.

Fly to Miami or any cruise port and take a cruise. You could get a good price the first two weeks of Dec. and choose one that goes to those private islands. Probably cost less per day than a land based vacation, most ports have a beach and it is usually a cheap taxi ride to get there.

My first thought was Hawaii, but I guess you'd need to fly there, too.

Continental U.S., I would think Florida. In California, December is nice to go to DL or to walk on the beach and hunt for seashells, but not for swimming and sunning.

Hawaii is nice, but not in the continental US, last time I looked.

Really OP, South FL is about the only place. There is no guaranty that the water will be warm enough for you, you are the only one who can judge that. Fishing, deep sea, lake, stream? Shopping, the keys not so much unless it's small shop stuff. For big malls, Miami is the place.

I agree with the PP about the cruise. Since air is free, book a week out of Fort Lauderdale or Miami or Port Canaveral or even Tampa. That way you can do all that is on your list and more.

San Diego has a pretty stable climate, it's usually in the 70's and 80's, it's also a great city to visit. So. FL is usually still pretty warm in winter, though they can get cold snaps. LA could be too far north, I've been there twice in the early spring and it was pretty chilly both trips (still warmer than Chicago, but not shorts and tank top weather either). Phoenix is very nice during the day but gets cool at night, no beaches but I don't think there is a hotel in the state that doesn't have a swiming pool .
