what special food item would you take a day trip to get??

Do you have a special food item that you will make a road trip to get ?
(SAY OVER 1 1/2 HOURS?)

{Inspired by the Krispy Kreme flight thread}

I plan on taking a road trip soon for a hot dog....LOL

about 1 1/2 hours to a place called Hot Dog Johnnies in Butzville NJ!!!

Cool old hot dog joint (are you listening Guy Fierie??)

If it were within daytripping distance, I would absolutely go to NY for bagels. That's about the only thing I can think of that I really love and can't match locally. Some bakery bagels here are pretty good, but they still can't approach the bagels my MIL (rest her soul) would go out and get some mornings before we got up when we were visiting her.

DW and I drove 8.5 hours in mid January to Wichita KS to eat at Abe's Steakhouse one last time before it closed, however we did not win the longest drive award for the night. A couple from California got that privilege.

I miss those 14 day dry aged steaks, the black light murals, and the jukebox full of Patsy Cline.

I don't make special trips for these things - but if I were already traveling, I'd look for a Sweet Tomatoes restaurant (!), or for Olive Garden Fettucine Alfredo, or Tillamook Cheese's Squeaky Cheese.

Oh how sad..I feel your pain...a movie theatre in the next town that opened as a vaudville house..just showed its last film a week ago.... it hurts to lose the old great places... I was glad to have been to the last show..but it was sooo sad

Most special food items are more than a day trip away

:dreaming of:

Buffalo wings, clam chowder, mozerella sticks, Cheddar Bay Biscuits to name a few.

Only another 160 days until I can stop dreaming

DH and I once drove to Hershey, PA which is 3 hours from us just so I can get chocolate chip cookies from Chocolate World! We stood for about 2 hours and drove home In my defense I was pregnant and DH would never say no to my cravings, he knew better!

Until we had an In-N-Out Burger here in N. Nevada we used to drive 120 miles over the Sierra's to get one for lunch!

120 miles to the nearest Spaghetti Factory - we have done the drive for dinner.

Mine is about 3 hours away in a town called Conway Arkansas. They have the absolute best Sweet Potato Fries with cinamon and sugar and honey. Then they have a dessert called a Chocolate Mess which is out of this world.

Honestly the entire restaurant is wonderful!

We drove about 5 hours for a hot dog at Tony Packo's in Toledo... from college (CMU in Mt. Pleasant, MI).. so don't laugh at the whole how far will you drive for a hot dog idea!!

Tony Packo's was the restaurant that Klinger always talked about on M*A*S*H* and once we found it was a real place... it was time for a ROAD TRIP!! Ahem... this was in 1980...

Nada. Maybe if gas was still .99 a gallon. I will take time to get favorite foods if I happen to be somewhere but I'm not going just for food.

I drove an hour to get a chicken pie. There is this little farm stand that is famous in the area for their chicken pies. They are so good and the crust is very flaky. They have used the same recipe for years and people around the area grew up eating them. So even with today's gas prices, I would drive if I had the craving! Maybe.
