Today was a very scary day... :(

As many of you know, I teach fifth grade here in New Jersey. Well, today was an extremely scary day for me and reminded me how important friends are.

Just before my first period class, I noticed that my hands were shaking. I thought that maybe my sugar was low (don't have diabetes, but thought so anyway) and sucked on some hard candy. This didn't help.

Within about 15-20 minutes, I felt very odd. I was still shaking a bit and had the sweats on and off. I also become short of breath here and there. Luckily, a colleague and good friend of mine was able to take my kids so I could visit the nurse. She checked my blood pressure, temperature (three times lol), pulse, and heart rate. Everything was fine. She then told me about some veragular? reaction caused by a 24-hour stomach virus going around. She said that she thinks I have it and to see how I feel in the next few minutes.

I drank some plain soda and ate a few crackers. I felt much better and decided to push through the day. My friend checked on me constantly and really helped out with things I needed to get done. She was amazing. I've been a little weak and tired since this morning. The nurse said that this was part of the virus, but should pass.

What a scary day. Thank God my friend was there to rescue me. It was so odd to feel this way.

Just thought I'd share/vent.

Glad your friend/nurse thought it was nothing more than a virus!! I hope she's right! And bravo to you for being a teacher!!

I agree that it's awesome to have friends there when you need them! I have an illness that causes fatigue sometimes and my girlfriend at work can always tell and never fails to lend a hand.

A dancing banana for all the awesome friends out there!!

Oh bless!

I hope you feel better!

It also sounds a bit like a panic attack to me, it might be that.

I had something just like that last weekend. I was able to push thru the days, but two nights in a row I had a high fever, shakes and stomach pains. It was odd.

That is what I was thinking, too, Wish. I think I got myself so worked up it started going into a panic attack. It was very odd.

They are horrid! I have had a lot of them, and they sound a lot like what you are saying!

Some people just have the odd one or two, and think 'that was odd' and move on, if you keep getting them, go speak to a doctor.

Wow - that IS scary! I hope you're feeling better now. Good friends can be hard to come by ... especially those who help out when you need it. I'm glad that you are blessed with one of those. I don't know what I would do without mine

Scary Day

I'm glad you're starting to feel better but if you are still feeling a bit weak by Monday - go to the doctor and make sure all is okay!! You're lucky to have such a good friend when you were in such a scary situation!!
Take care and feel better soon!!

I was gonna say a panic attack too. I had one once and it was just like that. For no reason at all I had similar symptoms. No stress, no worry, no reason it was kind of weird and it happened at work during my lunch break. It was kind of strange and never has happened since and that was about 4 years ago. ((HUG))

Get well soon! I absolutely HATE stomach viruses and flus, and know exactly what you are going through.

Hope you are feeling better soon. At least it happened on a Friday and you can rest over the weekend, hopefully.

How have you been doing the rest of the day? I hope whatever you had is out of your system now and you're feeling a-okay.

I was going to say that I've had panic attacks that feel like that. My DS is prone to them as well, and as he says, " I think I'm gonna die or go crazy"...they're that intense, but they pass.

Then there's vasovagal syncope, which can definitely occur after a viral illness, although there's other factors that can cause it as well. I wonder if this is what your friend was describing...

Quote:
People with vasovagal syncope typically have recurrent episodes, usually when exposed to a specific trigger. The initial episode often occurs when the person is a teenager, then recurs in clusters throughout his or her life. Prior to losing consciousness, the individual frequently experiences a prodrome of symptoms such as lightheadedness, nausea, sweating, ringing in the ears, uncomfortable feeling in the heart, weakness and visual disturbances. These last for at least a few seconds before consciousness is lost, which typically happens when the person is sitting up or standing. When they pass out, they fall down; and when in this position, effective blood flow to the brain is immediately restored, allowing the person to wake up.
It can be triggered by a lot of things...going to the bathroom, dehydration, lots of things. Basically, the blood vessels in the legs dilate, and the blood pools in the lower extremities, which means there's not enough circulation to the brain, and you pass out. Passing out, or the feeling that you are going to black out, are indicative of this disorder. Panic attacks generally don't cause you to want to pass out.

I used to get the vasovagal reaction quite a bit when I was attending college...almost always triggered by some intense veterinary procedure we were learning. Sweats, shaking, tunnel vision, nausea...then blackout, or nearly so. I got my head below my heart and ran cold water over my wrists...it seemed to help.

So far, so good. I was very tired and weak the rest of the day. The school's nurse said I would be. This morning I feel okay for the most part. I guess we shall see.
