travel insurance
Does travel insurance compensate you for your loss of DVC points if you have to cancel your accomodation at short notice and you are at the end of your use year?

Knowing the way insurance companies look for any excuse not to pay I'd be surprised if they did. There's not a tangible cost involved (like say when you pay to rent a villa) but I'd be interested to hear what others think

As far as I know, normal travel insurance would not cover the loss of points. However, DVC offer insurance that will cover loss of points. I can't remember who this is with but they always send details when they send you confirmation of your booking.
There are a few options, but the cheapest is fine for UK DVC'rs as it only really covers the loss of points - and is not that expensive. The other options are more expensive but cover things like airfare and baggage etc - seem to be more tailored to US customers. Hope this helps.

Except as a non-US resident you can't take out the special DVC insurance.
This is the significance of your Use Year. You need to ensure (as much as anyone is able to) that if you need to cancel your trip you can still do something with the points. This happened to us when we first bought - we were able to recoup not from insurance but by renting our points to others. If its at very short notice all you can do is try to rent out the time you have booked to others.

I must disagree with the previous poster. We have taken out the insurance each time we have used points.
