Just to clarify - you don't want the mini 2-tier cake that can fit on a salad plate, you want a full-sized cake that's a 6-inch layer on top and an 8-inch layer on the bottom? I believe the standard (pictured below) for a 2-tier is 6-inch on top and 10-inch on the bottom (where's CakeManBri when you need him?) but maybe it's only 8 inches....




The cake in the picture is the one that's included in Disney's package wedding, and they value it at around $200. (Which is not to say that's how much it actually costs! )

Most people who do anniversary cakes at Disney get a 6-inch round (like the top layer of the one pictured), and that usually runs $55-$85 (more with fancy decorations). So a two-tier could be considerably more than $100.

The BoardWalk Bakery seems to be the most accomodating lately, so you may want to chat with them (just call BoardWalk Inn and ask to be transferred). Alternatively, you can work with the Grand Floridian or Yacht & Beach Club bakeries through Private Dining at those resorts.

Thanks for the info. I was HOPING for less than $100, but if it's over, so be it. I may end up with a single 8". But you are right, the 10" and 6" is what I was thinking of. Just without the fondant. I had hoped without that, it would come in a little cheaper. I guess I will call and ask.

I just called the MK hotline and they told me the Mickey Head Cake was decorated in normal frosting rather than the fondant I've seen pictured. Is that right?

I don't think the Mickey head is fondant at all. I just think it's really slicked back dark chocolate icing. A bakery near me does it like that for some cakes. I was inquiring about cakes, looking at his pics and I thought they were fondant and they weren't.

I am pretty sure it is chocolate ganache and the "face" is a white chocolate piece. I am getting one in 2 weeks, so would be happy to report back if someone else doesn't come along before then.

I thought the Mickey Head cake was covered with ganache but maybe it's just regular chocolate icing.

The only place I have ever seen that one done is from the GF bakery (so you need to eat in one of their restaurants or stay at their hotel).

I'm referring to the Mickey Head cake in post #19. This is made out of frosting. I want to get this for DS's birthday at Chef Mickey's when we go.

That cake is covered in ganache, not frosting. There might be frosting under the ganache, which is common, but the shiney smooth park is ganache.

Okay so what is ganache?? Is it soft? Creamy? It's not like fondant right??

I keep seeing reviews that the cake was delicious and moist. DS loves chocolate so I hope he likes this!

Ganache is made by combining chocolate and heavy cream. It is poured and smoothed over the cake, then refrigerated so it firms up a bit. Considering the sheen I've seen on the cakes, I'm assuming they may also use a bit of butter to get the shiny finish instead of a matte. It tastes very chocolaty and rich. I'm pretty sure if your son loves chocolate he'll really enjoy this.
