Cheap lawn fertilizer

Where's the best place to buy inexpensive lawn fertilizer that still actually works? My husband usually buys the more expensive stuff, but this year he agreed to try some less expensive brands since the expensive stuff isn't really doing what it promises. Thanks!

Check the labels of the store brand fertilizers. I used to be a lawn & garden sales rep. Some of the store brands (including Sears) were made by Pennington. Pennington is a well-known seed and lawn care company. The provide the grass seed for many well-known ball fields and have an outstanding reputation. Since the Sears/Kmart merger I haven't been involved in their products but suspect it is still the same. The price of the Sears brand was significantly lower than the Scott's brand sitting next to it.

I like to use frequent very light applications of ammonium nitrate.
Early in the summer I also use some 13-13-13.

If used lightly and more frequently, then it does well.

We like the store brand sold at KMart. They always have a rebate too.
