Tipping with Disney Dining Plan

Will there be something on our receipt for a suggested tip when using the Disney Dining Plan? Or, will they have the amount that the meal would have cost if we didn't have the DDP and so we should go off that? MY 15-1/2 DS will be taking his little sister to the MK while Mom and Dad enjoy a date night and I know he'll be stressed about how much to tip. Also, can he just add it to our Key to the World card?

I was recently on the DxDDP for 9 days.

You will first get a check with the full OOP cost to calculate your tip. You could pay at this point any way you wanted to, use DDP or not. This check will have a calculated 18% and 20% tip.

If you have 6 people in your party, there is an automatic 18% gratuity, which you have to pay somehow after you use your KTTW to use the DDP. You can charge the auto gratuity to your KTTW - the auto gratuity is the easy case - no chance for confusion as there is always a 2nd transaction in addition the DDP

If fewer than 6 people, Be sure to tell the server you are on the DDP _before_ they bring you this check, or you won't get a line to write in your tip to charge to the KTTW. If you intend to tip cash, write cash, or write nothing, then just leave cash in the folio. If you want to tip any other way *tell your server* before they take your KTTW card -otherwise confusion ensues. The server will take your KTTW card and run your check through the DDP. You always will get a "DDP" receipt with zeros for all amounts covered by the DDP, with items like gratuity and any OOP items non-zero. You need to sign this to acknowledge the use of TS credits. There will be a non-zero amount is the KTTW charge for the gratuity and any other OOP items remaining on this first receipt. IF you did not previously indicate to your server the gratuity amount OR if the server forgets you were on the DDP, you may get totally zero first receipt. Presuming you didn't intend to tip zero, you basically have to tip cash to rectify the problem, or ask for the manager and ask to see if they can open up a new check just for a KTTW gratuity. The server will probably not notify you if you are making a mistake, as this could be construed as demanding a tip. You get a second receipt to sign for the gratuity and any OOP items charged to your card. There may be a tip line to this receipt. Don't add a tip to a tip! *NOTE* if the server thinks you will be charged for an OOP item, they think you are getting a second normal receipt for the OOP item, and may not pre-ask you for a tip amount, even if you indicated you are on the DDP. If you did have to pay for an OOP item, you can add your tip to the tip line for the whole meal to the 2nd receipt, just like you would for a normal charge at a restaurant. *NOTE* sometimes if you are on the DxDDP and ordered appetizers, the server will sometimes forget you are on the DxDPP and think you will be charged for an OOP item, but then is surprised that you have a totally zero receipt, and no 2nd receipt. In this case, you are back to tipping cash.

Closing, as tipping discussion is not permitted on the Restaurant Boards outside of the Tipping Information Thread on the main restaurant board:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2300858

The first post has an FAQ which should answer the original question, and also information as to why discussion of personal tipping habits is no longer permitted on the Restaurant Board.

The party of 8 will be charged the 18% tip as part of the bill on every meal. Parties of six or more pay an automatic gratuity. Please see the Tipping Information Thread.
