So can we visit SOG and eat at the restaurants, shop the commissary, etc. if we are not guests? We're staying at all star music but wonder if the food over the there will be better and a better price.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether retired DOD are able to book rooms at SOG, and what they need to show. My parents would qualify if so, and could use the break. Of course, I would love the opportunity to stay there too.....

You would have to show a valid military ID to get onto Shades property, and also to make a purchase in the AAFES store. And unless you have a car, it would not be easy to get there.

I read somewhere that they have one in the laundry room but I do not know personally.

I'm pretty sure we did see one in the laundry room as we were walking past. (I don't do laundry on vacation! )

Yes, there are microwaves in the laundry rooms. I used one during our last stay in November 2008, It was adequate for warming foods and cooking small frozen dinners.

While anyone can just walk onto SOG property without showing ID, as buffettgirl said, why in the world would anyone want to make the special trip, wasting their time in the process, just to eat there? The food really is not the best. Think WDW buffet with a much much poorer budget.

In addition to answer the other question asked, the gift shop is no different than any other. Just the basics stuff one would need on a vacation. They have nicer stuff at the WDW resort gift shops. Don't be disappointed if once you get there, you are asked for proof of staying there to purchase stuff. If you are military and just staying somewhere else, your military ID will be fine.

Now for the million dollar question.......Why would they have a microwave in the laundry room? That seems like such an odd place. Don't they have an unused room or an empty space in a room somewhere? I would like to see microwaves in each guest room or at least make them available to guests for a fee if they want one. I know I looked up info on a WDW resort concerning the 40% off deal and saw that a microwave could be requested. It was a bit surprising to me that a WDW resort would offer this but not SOG. Afterall, SOG was the first to introduce permanant fridges in each room.

As of today, Evergreen is still open with no signs of closing, according to DH who is there now.

So do you think what everyone heard was just a rumor??? That's good if it was. The need to keep evergreens (or something like it) open.

No problem. This time we asked for the new section. If we get it, it will be a first for us. When we take our grands we like to be near the pool.

Thanks. We've only been in the old section. But we were near to the lobby (and it was dec) so the pool wasn't a big deal for us.

There are 3 of us going (us, mom&dad, brother&wife) and I was hoping for first floor rooms - we had great patios in the old section and we all sat outside, playing cards, it was better than having adjoining rooms. I'd miss that if we had a "private" balcony. So I'm hoping for that again.
