Making requests question

I'm looking for a little help regarding making special requests. My wife has had two surgeries this year. One on her heel and the other on her knee. In the past we have had to rent an ECV, however, the surgeries were supposed to fix the issues that she had. "WERE" is the key word in the last sentance. Although the surgeries were succesfull, she still has some pain which at this point is tolerable. However, after a day at a park, coming back to SSR and having to walk up stairs and possibly a long walk to a pool may pose an issue. I know the springs section is the closest to the main building and the main pool, however, what should I request as my second choice if springs is not available. Also, to make a room request, should I just call M.S. or do I call SSR direct. ( I can't remember what I did the last time when we stayed at OKW) Our trip is in 3 weeks, so I want to take care of this soon. Any help is appreciated. Thanks..........Jim

PS...We will have a rental car with a handicap placard for the first 4 days of the trip, the last 4 days we will not as one member of the party is leaving. So, bus stops should also be considered when suggesting an area. Thanks.

The SSR buildings all have elevators so should not be a problem with having to climb stairs there.

You can call Member Services and have a request added, for example to be close to a pool, however, that will only be a request not a guarantee.

As far as transportation, I would use taxis if necessary instead of buses after your rental car is gone. Would make it much easier if she is in pain particularly after visiting a park all day.

Good luck!

Jim, when you call MS, mention that these are medical requests. Explain the situation regarding the surgeries (if you're okay with that). In my experience, those types of requests were always honored, the couple of times that I needed them.

As far as location in SSR, if you know that you'll be using the buses, I would suggest the Grandstand vs. the Springs. Some of the Grandstand rooms are just as close to the Carriage House area (if not closer) than some of the ones in the Springs section. But most importantly, the Grandstand is usually the first bus stop to/from the parks, whereas the Springs is the last. Many times, it's SRO by the time the bus gets there, and I wouldn't count on there always being "gallant" folks willing to give your wife a seat.

Good luck and hope your wife feels great the whole time!

I would strongly recommend you get your wife an ECV. DH had hip surgery this year that also "should" have solved the walking problem. Reality is, the moment when any more walking is just too much could arrive when you are at the back end of a park instead of when you are arriving back at your resort. We got DH an ECV this year "just in case" and we were really glad we did. Those parks are huge and can wear out someone who has no issues. If she is still having some pain (although "tolerable" ) why spend a vacation having to tolerate pain when you don't have to?

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions. Mikesmom....I've been trying to talk her into getting the ECV but she's fighting me. We're going with friends this time and I don't think she wants it for that reason. I'm going to keep pressing the issue and see what happens......I still have two weeks to go. Jim

I know how she feels. I had to use a ECV for the first time last month. I still don't care for the idea and I hate delaying people while I get on the buses. The thing that sold me though is the fact that it is easier on the family and myself if I use a ECV. They can enjoy Disney at their own pace and I can keep up.

I rent mine from Scootarama for $25 per day.

You might want to check out the Disabilities board here in the DIS.

another option is if she is adament about not wanting an ECV in the parks, get one anyway and just use it at the resort? Sure its an expense, but by the end of the day, the last thing you want to worry about is if you can't get to where you want to go. Plus it would be great to have so she could go with the group to say DTD and everyone could just walk over.
