HDDR or Luau?

We've seen the HDDR over 20 times and absolutely love the show. I always try and do different things on each trip so this time I was going to try the Luau. Boy, that didn't go over very well!

My questions are will the Luau be okay for our 4 YR grandson or will he be bored? He loves the HDDR!!

Also, is it more adults than kids and how's the food?

Food is OK. You can eat it, it just isn't anything to rave about. I think a four-year-old would get bored through parts of the show. I don't really look around a lot, but my guess is that there are as many kids at the Poly Luau as the Hoop.

HDDR is a lot better than the Poly Luau, but if you want to see it, go see it!
I have nothing to put here.

You also have to worry about weather and the Luau - if it rains ... this is outdoors so there would be no Luau. Not sure how they handle that though ...
-------------------LATER: -----------------------------------
Other posters have indicated that the Luau is held during the rain -- so no worry about rain -- now cold ... (and sometimes in Jan-Feb it can get cold ... well that is a different story).

The Luau just seems more adult oriented than kid oriented.

Luau hasn't been good for years and it use to be one of my favorites. I stayed at the PR two years ago and didn't bother going.

Now the HDDR I still love, same ol' corny jokes since the 70's and I love every minute of it.

Thanks everyone for all the responses - just as I thought, I'll be booking HDDR again this year!!! You're right, same old corny jokes from the 70's but we still love them!

We went to both in January, and loved them both. But if I HAD to choose, I'd choose HOOP. We're going to both again January '08!

I have to agree with everyone. Last year we did both and although the food was good at both, my husband and I just could not get into the Luau. My mother in law was the one who wanted to go to it, but we enjoyed the Hoop much much more. For me, it's also where you sit. In the Hoop you see everything but at the Luau, depending on where you sit you may not see much and that was our problem. We didn't see very much.

They do hold the Luau during rain....we saw it in the rain in 2003, right after they refurbished the theater. Most of the stage and all the guest seating is undercover.

I found most of the food quite yummy, particularly the salad and the meats. I was really impressed how good it was, considering how many people they were feeding at one time.

I loved the dance and music a lot and was really disapointed that I didn't remember to bring my camcorder. The storyline was kind of silly, but gave the show some direction. My kids were not as thrilled with it as I was, but they did love the firedancer and the music.

Since you've done the other show so many times, I'd definitely give this one a try, if I were you.

We did the Luau last September and the HDDR this past August. I must say I like both but probably liked HDDR more. We saw the Luau in the rain as well and I'm not sure how much that affected the show.

The food was good at both.

We have done Hoop twice and loved it. I am planning on trying the Luau in April. I guess I won't know if I like it if I don't try it.

We did both shows in early august. We always make it a point to see HDDR, but this was the first time to see the Luau. I heard of the Luau as "the brady bunch goes to Hawaii" and that description was ok I guess. The show was a bit corny, but it was fun and entertaining. I think a 4 yr old would be very entertained by the show, especially the fire baton guy. The food was pretty good. I stuffed my face with ribs, sweet bread, rice and fresh pineapple. Oh so good. (Not to mention that draft beer was included.)

I love the HDDR and this past show was probably the most fun I've ever had at the show, but if you've done the HDDR for 20yrs, nothing wrong with trying something new. Walking around the polynesian was great and the show was pretty good. I say give the luau a try!

Oh it rained before our luau and just a bit into the show, but I think that just added to the fun.

I would do Ohana and your 4 year old will love it. My DD, who had just turned 5 last October, loved it and hated the Luau.
